The donning of ones first pair of trousers (known as a breeching ceremony) was for a very long time considered kind of a transformative coming of age, and into one's male gender, ceremony all the way up into the 1900s when this idea seemed to fade away into obscurity. One proposed reasoning for this fading of tradition was the invention of more efficient washing technologies which meant it was easier to clean your child's soiled clothing.
Mothers often tried to delay the ceremony, particularly for smaller or sickness prone children, as post-ceremony it was expected the child would no longer be as connected to the domestic sphere of the mother, and move towards their fathers mentorship and influence.
