Data & Magic Chapter 92: Shared Secret

Her eyes widened further, if possible, then crinkled at the corners. A slow, wondrous smile spread across her face, erasing the last traces of shock, replaced by pure delight and fascination.
“Wow,” she breathed, the word filled with genuine wonder. She took a cautious step closer, sinking gracefully into a low crouch on the moss, bringing herself closer to Snowy’s level. “You… you speak in the mind? Truly? And your name is Snowbright… Snowy?” She extended a hand slowly, cautiously, towards Snowy, as if offering a gesture of friendship. “And no, I'm not going to be mean to William. I've only just met him, but he seems… fascinating. Being a human, and all, and now… having a dragon companion.”
Snowy, apparently satisfied with this response, and perhaps a little flattered by the attention, puffed out her chest slightly, her iridescent scales shimmering even more brightly. < Well, you better not! William is very nice to me! He feeds me boar, and lets me play… sometimes, and… and tells me stories! So it's my job to protect him. I'll be watching you! > The threat, delivered in a childish mental voice, was more endearing than intimidating.
Lily couldn't help but laugh, a genuine, melodic sound that filled the garden, echoing off the ancient stones of the statues. She was completely captivated by Snowy, her initial fear utterly dissolved, replaced by an almost childlike wonder and a deep, instinctive affection. She also seemed impressed, and slightly amused, by the strength of the bond between William and the young dragon, a bond that transcended species and defied all expectations.
“Forgive my reaction, Snowy the Snowbright. It is just… I have only read of your kind in the oldest chronicles. To meet one… it is overwhelming. I am Lisandra, called Lily. It is an honour beyond words.” Her voice was soft, respectful, utterly captivated.
Snowy observed the outstretched hand, then looked mentally at William < See? Nice! Told you! >, before tentatively stretching her neck forward and gently bumping Lily’s fingers with her snout, a gesture of surprising trust. < Lily is a nice name too. Like the flowers. >
Lily let out a soft laugh, a sound like wind chimes, as she gently stroked Snowy’s snout with one finger. “Thank you, Snowy. Your scales are like cool pearls.” She seemed utterly enchanted, her earlier questions about Aver and William completely forgotten in the face of this living legend. William watched the interaction, feeling a complex mix of relief, residual anxiety, and analytical curiosity. Interspecies communication established. Initial threat assessment negative. Probability of gaining localized ally: Increasing.
After a moment, however, Lily’s expression sobered slightly. She looked up at William, her silver gaze holding a newfound seriousness, an understanding that went beyond simple wonder.
“I understand now, William Shard,” she said softly, her voice regaining its measured calm, though still filled with underlying awe. “I understand why you hid her. Why you were so cautious.” Her gaze swept the tranquil garden, then seemed to look beyond, towards the wider world. “Dragons… they are echoes of an elder age. Here, in Lumenar, the histories are… complex. Some revere them as ancient kin to the First Trees, beings of primal power. Others,” her expression clouded slightly, “remember only the destructive potential, the Great Wyrms of fire and shadow spoken of in cautionary tales, associating all dragonkind with chaos.”
She sighed, stroking Snowy gently again, the dragonet leaning into the touch. “Most believe your kind,” she looked at Snowy, “entirely vanished from these lands millennia ago. Her existence… it would cause ripples far beyond this garden. Fear among some, dangerous avarice among others.” Her eyes met William's, conveying a clear warning. “Especially now, with the darkness stirring beyond our borders. A creature like Snowy, even as a hatchling, represents immense potential power, to be protected, or,” her voice dropped, “to be exploited.”
William nodded slowly, the weight of responsibility settling back heavily. Hearing the political and historical context from an elf, one who seemed knowledgeable and sympathetic, reinforced the danger far more than his own abstract analysis. Confirmation from local expert: Asset Snowy represents high strategic value AND high risk. Secrecy remains paramount.
“You carry a heavy burden, William,” Lily continued, her voice soft but firm, filled with unexpected empathy and wisdom. “Caring for her, protecting her, guiding her as she grows into whatever power she inherits… it is a task of immense significance. You are shaping not just her future, but potentially,” her gaze was profound, “a future few in this age have dared to imagine.”
He felt a lump form in his throat. Her words, her quiet understanding, resonated deeply. This wasn't just about survival anymore, or completing a mission. It was about nurturing this spark of ancient life, this unexpected connection. “Yes,” he said, his voice firm, despite the tremor in his hands. “I understand. It's… a huge responsibility. A daunting responsibility. But I'll do my best. I promise you, I promise her, I'll do everything I can to protect her, to guide her, to help her become the best dragon she can be.” He wasn't sure why he felt compelled to make this promise to Lily, a stranger, an elf he had known for mere minutes. But he did. It felt important, essential, a vow made not just to her, but to Snowy, and to himself.
Snowy, sensing the shift in the conversation, the underlying current of seriousness, nudged William's leg with her snout, her blue eyes filled with a mixture of confusion and trust. She didn't understand the complex words, perhaps, but she understood the feeling, the bond of affection and responsibility that connected them. < See, William? I am important! > Her mental voice was smug, a touch childish, but also filled with a genuine desire for approval, a yearning to be worthy of the trust that William so freely gave.
Both William and Lily couldn't help but smile at Snowy's assessment, a shared moment of levity that momentarily dispelled the heavy atmosphere. The laughter was a release, a brief respite from the weight of responsibility that had settled upon William's shoulders.
Lily smiled again, a radiant expression that seemed to light the garden. “It seems you have already forged a powerful bond.” Her smile faded slightly as practicality returned. “But my earlier point stands. You must continue to keep her hidden, William. Especially from the High Council, particularly Elder Syltharil, until the King himself is aware and can offer protection or guidance. Syltharil… he adheres to the most rigid interpretations of ancient laws regarding 'creatures of disruptive potential'.” The warning was clear.
“I understand,” William affirmed. “Utmost discretion.”
“Good.” Lily rose gracefully to her feet. “Now, you should return to your companions before your absence causes concern. The barracks are well-guarded, you should be safe there tonight.” She paused, biting her lip slightly, her curiosity returning. “Tomorrow… after your audience, if circumstances permit… perhaps you would honor me with a further conversation? There is so much I wish to ask, about Aver, about… everything. And,” she smiled down at Snowy, “I would very much like to speak with Snowbright again.”
William felt a surge of relief mixed with anticipation. An invitation, not an alarm. An ally, perhaps? “I would be honored, Lily. If Sir Roland permits it after the Council meeting.”
“I suspect,” Lily said, a mischievous twinkle returning to her silver eyes, “that after Warden Rynarion makes his full report, securing permission might be less difficult than you anticipate. He was… notably intrigued by your perception on the path.” She gave another graceful dip of her head. “Until tomorrow, then, William Shard. May your path be lit.”
Before William could reply, she turned and melted back into the foliage near the fountain with the same uncanny silence as the elven guards, leaving William alone in the garden with Snowy and a whirlwind of thoughts.
He carefully settled the now-sleepy Snowy back into the prepared sling inside his backpack, securing the flap. Okay. Encounter logged: Lisandra/'Lily'. Status: Non-hostile, High Curiosity, Potential Ally? Knowledgeable about internal politics. Aware of Snowy's existence. He checked EMMA. MP: 156/165. Minimal drain. Risk Assessment: Immediate threat averted. Long-term risk: Significantly increased due to compromised secrecy (one party). Mitigation: Leverage potential alliance with Lily? Data insufficient. He sighed. Nothing was ever simple.
With one last glance around the beautiful, secret garden, he pulled his hood back up and headed swiftly back towards the patrol barracks, his mind racing with the implications of the encounter, the weight of Snowy in his pack feeling heavier than ever. He had survived discovery, yes. But he had a distinct feeling his journey into Lumenar had just become infinitely more complicated.
