The Orangemen giving the family a hard time is because they are/were always an anti catholic/anti irish hate group. A key factor in Northern Ireland still belonging to the UK instead of a United Ireland, AND are also key factors in "The Troubles."

The man in their boot was a member of the IRA (fighting in the civil war at the time against the UK government and in favour of unifying Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland). The reason no-one wanted to tell the police about him is because they're all Catholics and are therefore on the same side more-or-less, even if not everyone wanted to go so far as help him cross the border

Her Sterling purse is the purse with British money in it, pounds and pennies etc. Sterling is the name of British currency. In Northern Ireland, where they're from, they use Sterling as Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland isn't. Just incase you didn't know that already lol. You ought to look up something about what was going on in Northern Ireland at the time, I do think it would help to give you a bit more of a perspective of what's happening in the background of the show :)
