That was a weird way of pronouncing umbilical cord, I haven't heard it pronounced that way in England before. I think he was just trying to be a pretentious doctor

But I think it's more common over here than in the US for people not to find out the baby's sex until it's born, lots of people still prefer to have a surprise. Thinking of the last 3 women I know who were pregnant only one found out what she was having beforehand.
