2025-01-18 16:52:32 +0000 UTCA different style of sitcom comedy, I have no doubt it'll grow on you the more you watch. Probably more chuckle than a belly laughs. Once they settle into the format and know the strengths of the child performers, I think they know how play to those strengths more.

2025-01-18 16:46:03 +0000 UTCI also think the first episode is slow, but I also thought that was true with the friends pilot and sometimes it just takes a while for a show to find its feet. What I love with this show is that it’s a scripted for the adults, but that much of it involved telling the kids the topic and letting them just roll with it so it’s a lot more natural sounding (as you commented on) Most of these comments already answered things you asked about giving Grandads address for the catchment area. Regarding the headlice I think the US and UK are different as I’ve seen so many US shows where they make it out to be a huge deal rather than just parts of parenting and where the kids have to stay home until they’re gone. The way that she was treated it was using a comb following the shampoo treatment. The shampoo kills the living lice, but doesn’t get rid of the eggs (that’s what nits are) so if you don’t do both then you’re just going to be reinfected when those ones hatch.

2025-01-18 11:56:48 +0000 UTCThe fun in this show is in knowing that much of the dialogue is improvised. Its only semi-scripted so it allows the characters (especially the kids) to come out with some wacky but funny lines.

2025-01-18 04:50:33 +0000 UTCThis definitely takes some getting used to, for a few reasons, but I do think it will grow on you, Josh. The humour is very understated and relies quite heavily on this quite middle class stiff upper lip, gritted teeth approach to chaos - there are no real jokes as such, it's all a tennis match of acting and reacting, the kids acting, and the parents reacting but having to stifle their reactions at the same time. It's exceptionally British in that way - so much of our comedy is about embarrassment and awkwardness and the pain of saying far less than you want to. The child actors are essentially making it all up, with no actual script, and just Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton giving them all a scenario and getting them to act it out. It's definitely more natural that way but it can make it seem inconsistent in terms of pacing and tonally a bit jarring, with the parents' dialogue mostly scripted and the kids throwing lines in no one knows are coming. It does improve as it goes on - this episode is a tad underwhelming and such a different approach to a situation comedy; it almost doesn't work, but somehow they just about get away with it, later on making quite a success of it.

2025-01-18 04:09:57 +0000 UTCThis definitely isn’t the strongest episode. There’s a lot more specific situations later on but this serves as an introduction to the characters. Also, the kids weren’t given a script just told what to talk about so a lot of its improvised! I think that’s what gives it its charm
