What else can be said about the Spider-Verse duology, soon to be a trilogy? Amazing story is displayed throughly through brilliant animation, the first movie being fully CGI but incorporating 2D-like effects to make it resemble a comic book. This has already made ripples across the animation industry, from other Sony Pictures films like The Mitchells vs the Machines to Dreamworks Puss In Boots. With even actual 2D works like Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur drawing aesthetic inspiration, the first film is already one of the most influential animated works of all time, having rapidly reinvigorating the industry.
And it’s sequel is the culmination of that.
Actual 2D this time, alongside Lego stop motion. Vivid ambient coloration to reflect character moods, replicas of punk magazines and Renaissance art that took the animators 3 years to accomplish. Across the Spider-Verse is not only refreshing amidst the wave of inspiration from the original, it truly celebrates nearly all forms of animation there are.
I can only hope to see what escalation this will induce. This movie took my breath away.
