Inside No. 9: Season 4, Episode 5 And The Winner Is...

Comments

Agreed. I like the new star treks too(the first one especially). But I’m not a massive super fan of Star Trek so I didn’t get that same ‘oh no how dare they’ feeling when they changed things up for a new generation of viewers. I just thought they were exciting and enjoyable films. I think part of the problem is that fans think they own a certain franchise because they grew up with it. And then when someone comes along and makes changes to that they feel outraged. Also they have a picture in their heads of what these movies should be like from their childhood and no new movie is ever gonna match up.

Saul

Yeah, there was a ton of hate for the Last Jedi ,I enjoyed it. Now was it perfect no, but I did enjoy it. It's the same for Star Trek although the new movies werent perfect I thought they were fun and a much-needed boost to a dying franchise. But it's hard to please die-hard old-school fans.

That's wild I didn't notice her picture was the only one in color . Yeah, what's up with that lol?

I didn’t mean to suggest that there weren’t legit criticisms of TLJ. If you didn’t like it that’s fine. But anyone who says it’s the worst film ever etc is not being reasonable and I heard that a lot. I heard a lot of specific criticisms that made no sense and the backlash against it was driven by some complete morons. It was one of the most pathetic events in recent pop cultural history. Petitions, troll armies death threats etc. If your criticisms are legit and in good faith then your problem should be with so many of your fellow fans who made it hard to believe honest criticism. Re. what you think of my ranking of it in the pantheon - I couldn’t give a shit. The originals aren’t high art. .

Saul

How is that cover and not just genuine criticism? Seems like you're trying to exclude that genuine criticism as being something other simply because you don't like it. Be careful of taking anyone seriously who thinks the last Jedi was not only good, but better than any of the originals.

Contex - It's Just A Ride

That is awesome man, I will save the link and listen to it after the show 😁

After Work Reactions

Oh yeah he did too, I forgot about that.. I loved those movies growing up, Kidulthood, Adulthood.. Anuvahood was a bit weird though lmao

Austin Stratton

As someone else has mentioned "Gordon" aka Noel Clarke stars (also a very good performance/character) in kidulthood. Looking forward to that movie reaction!

Hey Josh, I liked what you said at the end about criticism. I agree that the kind of non-specific, OTT criticism that you hear nowadays from 'fans'(thinking of the recent anti-LOTR bullabaloo, but honestly I could check back in twenty minutes and it'll be something else) is not helpful, and a lot of the time the criticism is just a cover for their real reasons, eg. anti-wokism, dislike of 'diversity casting', LGBTQ politics being 'shoved down our throats'. And the criticisms are never proportional. The Last Jedi, the only Star Wars film I've ever genuinely liked, wasn't just not what people wanted, it was always 'complete trash' or 'the worst film ever made', etc. It's just depressing the OTT way they lay into the stuff they don't like, as though it's an existential battle between good and evil, and Rian Johnson is actively trying to go back in time and ruin their childhoods. There's just no talking to people like that, they might as well be on a religious crusade, But it reminded me of something that I'v always thought about criticism in general: like you say, just don't criticise people about things they can't change. Criticise someone for their bad behaviour, fine. But don't criticise someone for having a big nose, or bow legs or a lisp. Seems obvious but if everyone took it onboard it'd make a big difference and the world would be easier to navigate for the people who are most vulnerable.

Saul

I liked this. I thought the inevitable twist ending was unnecessary and it was just a nice little satire of the politicking and bullshit of awards season. Sometimes I think a genuinely surprising twist would be if an episode of Inside No 9 didn't end with a twist - sometimes it feels like they've tied themselves into making every episode surprising and shocking, when often there's no need for it and it actively alters the balance of the story or unsettles its tone. But then the upside is you really don't know what to expect from week to week, you'll never be entirely comfortable with the show, and that's a rare thing in TV, and worth treasuring. So on the whole I think the show walks that line pretty well.

Saul

He also wrote it.

Keith Pratt

Thanks, TheHigh, hope you're doing well too x I've never seen Kidulthood so I'm looking forward to it :)

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

GREAT movie lol no shit about it XD

Austin Stratton

Yeah that clip is fine, doesn't mention anything he hasn't watched yet :)

Austin Stratton

eh it was an ok episode , could be wrong but isn't the only picture of the actors that's not in black and white the black chick ? what with that lol ? looking forward to you kidaulthood reaction josh ha , its a great/shit movie lol and stars "Gordon" from this , hope everyone is doing well 👍🕊️

TheHigh

Went to see Richard Herring interview Reece Shearsmith for his podcast last Monday - well worth a listen to the whole thing (but Josh wait until you’ve watched the whole series! This clip might be okay, what do you all think) https://fb.watch/fC_T1Ar3iR/

Cold Comfort is pretty widely talked about (in my experience at least) and considered one of the best episodes

Kieran B

Although this is often considered one of the poorer episodes I still really enjoy it, possibly because I’m a bit of an actor too - in the same way Ricky Gervais was in series one of extras (that’s the most accurate portrayal of being a film and TV extra ever)

Kieran B

Zoe Wannamaker is actually American by the way - although she grew up here mostly, her parents are American / Canadian and she was born in New York. I think she was going for a certain type of American luvvy accent

Kieran B

Zoe Wannamaker's accent stole my heart

mwdoom

Zoe Wannamaker's American accent was awful XD And yeah Noel Clarke played Thomas Harewood in Star Trek Josh, good eye!

Austin Stratton

I can't bear Empty Orchestra personally (subjewctive tastes!) but Cold Comfort is the best episode in the entire show; I was also surprised people don't talk about it much. I could watch an entire series in that style.

ALW

That is the beauty of anthologies! I'm aware I have a very unpopular opinion when I say Riddle of the Sphinx is largely overrated, but I actually share your love of Empty Orchestra, I think it's a really good "slice of life" story, but I do understand why fans of the show may not love it, seeing as it has a different tone. Then there are episodes like Cold Comfort, possibly my favourite episode, when I first saw it I assumed it would be considered a "classic" No. 9 episode, but it seems that people don't talk about that one much, which surprises me. This episode does rank a bit on the lower side I admit, but apart from the one I mentioned, I think the upcoming episodes are some of the best.

Ben

That's the thing about this show - we all have our favourites and least favourites, and we all appreciate different aspects of the show. I think I know which future episode you're referring to and I see where you're coming from but I still preferred it to this one. Empty Orchestra is one of the lowest rated episodes I think but it might be in my top 5. It's low key but it's a morality tale, has quiet tragedy in it, romance, a rare happy ending, is rather touching, and I love the setting and use of music. It was very different for Reece and Steve but it was effortless and worked so well. But yeah, this one just felt a bit too frivolous to me; not bad though.

Ash Jeffries

It's not the best episode, but for me it's not their worst. Their worst, in my opinion is a later episode in which they overexplain the twist, basically an extended monologue spelling it all out for the viewer, when they're usually much better at not doing the work for you. This is an episode with very low stakes, but it does what it says on the tin, the other one I'm talking about is one that tried something big but it didn't land (for me at least), I guess it's just a matter of opinion which is more open to criticism.

Ben

This is my least favourite episode of the entire run so far (yes, all 7 series!) and I think it's because it is, to me, so low stakes, and so dull story-wise. It is quite a funny episode but that isn't quite enough for me where IN9 is concerned. I found the twist both predictable and underwhelming. It's a logical turn of events but I'm just left thinking "OK...fair enough... and?" I don't need the show to be super dark or out there to be satisfying, but I found this episode just left a lot to be desired. For me, whatever genres are being straddled or explored, the very best episodes of this show tap into the human condition, and they're very thought provoking. And The Winner Is...? is really successful as a piece of light satirical comedy, but it doesn't really offer anything else. It's not badly written or acted and if a script like this is the least engaging work Reece and Steve have produced then it's really quite the testament to their talent. Some writers churn out scripts not even half as good as this one for seasons on end. They're simply brilliant and that's why their "so-so" stuff is so conspicuous, and thankfully pretty rare.
