One Foot in the Grave: Season 4, Episode 5 The Trial

They get a budget for all 6 episodes so to pay for location heavy episodes like 'Hearts of Darkness' they do a comparatory cheaper episode to balance the books. Next week's is another classic.

Another season 4 winner here - and a brilliant solo performance from Richard Wilson. The yucca plant gag is my favourite visual gag of the entire series - just PERFECT. This is where writing, direction and acting all come in to play to create the perfect joke - panning across like that so that the visual punchline is delivered at exactly the same time as the aural one is a stroke of genius and something I think we excel at in the UK. The direction of the scene in Fawlty Towers where Basil beats his car with the tree branch but the camera stays on the car and we see Basil disappear for a few seconds and return with the branch - a similar example. It just wouldn't have been as funny if the camera had followed Basil. "Still, I've had a good life..... (dawn of realisation) I'VE HAD A BLOODY AWFUL LIFE!" Haha - so well delivered by Richard Wilson. I also really chuckle at Victor dangling the Daddy Long Legs out of the window and grumbling, "What are you waiting for? A parachute?!" There's no real plot to this episode, unusually; it's one of only a handful of static episodes from a sitcom that is pretty plot heavy, but it just proves what a brilliant writer Renwick is. This really works, is just as funny as the "busier" episodes, and there is still an impressive amount of creativity with the jokes and characterisation. A top episode from the super season 4.
