Mr. Bean Season 1, Episode 1

Comments

I'm sure this is how the world views us british people. We're either bond or bean lol.

Hiphopanonymous

I've just realised the person giving the simlish speech in the background of the church sounds like (and probably is) Rowan Atkinson.

Nh05401

Mr. Bean is legendary. Simple humor but executed so well and I always find it amazing how Rowan Atkinson never makes you think of Blackadder at all when playing him.

Menty

I don’t think I’ve ever seen these in episode/series order for a long long time, almost always in clip form etc. No matter how old you are, or how much society changes there will always be a place for Mr Bean, pure and simple, non-serious and non-pretentious comedy

Sam Dilks

Yes, Mr. Bean is the UK's most famous export. Even China and ultra conservative religious theocracies love him.

Toby Mann

I grew up watching Mr Bean over and over and never knew that, thank you so much for pointing it out!

Michael Leighton's Karl Pilkington Animations

Mr Bean isn't outdated. It's timeless, and due to it being almost exclusively visual comedy it also travels very well. The Chinese and Japanese love him. I saw an interview where he flew to Japan or somewhere close and was shocked that there was thousands of people all waiting screaming for him. Nothing like he had experienced in the UK. Mr Bean represents the selfish, silly, rebellious kid in all of us and I think that's why so many people can identify with it.

Tom Tucker

It's certainly not for everyone. But you need to take into account that it's supposed a modern silent comedy.

Kickstart 1.3

Hi Josh, so happy Mr bean won. Sorry if I'm doing this wrong but could I please ask you to add 'the party (1968)' Peter sellers movie to your massive list for a future poll one day? One of the funniest films I've seen.

Hiphopanonymous

You're in luck because the banner says The Royle Family.

(Just) Steve

yeah i think josh will love spaceballs too i vote it everytime its on, maybe one day.

martyn dodds

This is probably the weakest episode so glad you enjoyed it. I don't think this has aged at all, it's timeless comedy, and universal.

Wilss

I don't think it's aged badly at all, Bean's so universal as to be timeless. But there is a difference between watching it as a kid and watching it as an adult. Maybe that's what people are trying to say.

Saul

I remember this episode, specifically the punchline with the blind guy on the beach. Was very young when I first saw it and thought it was very clever. This is essentially a sketch show, and sketch shows are usually not considered for this channel, so it's arguably a little lucky it made it through. Clearly a lot of fans, but I agree with people who say it hasn't aged well. There are moments of brilliance - I love where he flattens his head down on the desk and blows the paper so he can see the guy's answers - but it's just too obvious and predictable now I'm older. It might get better though. I've been voting steadily for Spaced each time, purely because it seems made for this channel and also because it involves people I like and trust, and who routinely come out with great stuff. I never watched it first time and I feel for the people who keep seeing it miss out. I'm sure my parents made me watch Tati when I was a kid. Must've slipped past me.

Saul

Just a thought actually, I doubt it will get many votes for a while but Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday from 1953 could be worth a look, really good physical comedy and you can see the origins of the Bean character. That said you definitely need to see Spaceballs first, can’t wait till that finally gets voted in

Kieran B

I can't enjoy this while the banner still says The Royale Family. I will watch it once the banner is updated.

Yeah, sure you see it all the time in comments, people suggesting shows to a reactor who clearly would not have any interest in that show or genre, and is being suggested purely because that person likes it, but it doesn't mean you're going to get a good reaction out of it. I know one reactor who is doing Supernatural at the moment, and they get messages from people telling them that they shouldn't like a certain character. People can be insane.

Mark McKeown

Although I’ve been looking forward to Spaced since the channel began I’ll happily watch a bit of Mr Bean again, loved it as a kid and there’s still plenty to enjoy now. As much as I absolutely love the wit of a Yes, Minister, the biting satire and poetic swearing of the Thick of It, the classic wry humour of Porridge and the kitchen sink realism of the Royle Family - not every comedy has to be like that. I love Jacques Tati too and his M. Hulot character, who Bean is probably closest too

Kieran B

Some people also claim Only Fools & Horses aged badly. They couldn't be more wrong imo. There's only the odd reference that might go over someone's head but the vast majority of it is still great.

Luke Barron

I don't know why people would 'warn' you about this show, they may not like it and that's fine, but it's clear the humour is right up your street.

Mark McKeown

Oh ok awesome man! Lol VHS tapes were fun man.

After Work Reactions

I’ve been looking forward to you reacting to this! There isn’t a single boring episode in my opinion. I beg you to react to his comic relief skits Plant-Man (Spider-Man parody) mr bean as plant man The wedding - one of my favourites Blind date - a classic Enjoy the show josh! Keep up the good work !

Craig boore

I was about 6-7 when this came out and from the moment this episode aired, Friday swimming at school switched to everyone putting their trunks on the Bean way every.single.week.

Stu T

Mr Bean was such a big show to watch growing up here. I love that you are getting to watch it, and your laugh every time really proves that no matter whether it be in the 1990s or today, as a grown adult or as a child….it’s just a really great show and definitely stands the test of time. FUN FACT - James Acaster’s ex-girlfriend left him for Rowan Atkinson! James has definitely discussed it on tv, so you may well see that at some point. Speaking of James Acaster….I VERY HIGHLY recommend you watch his four part stand up Netflix special called Repertoire! It’s magnificent. Sending lots of love to you, Tay and the babies, as always. Hi to the other Josh Patrons 👋!

CatsandCrafts

I think they came up with the alien thing later on, as I remember this pilot episode didn't originally have the beaming down intro (still have it recorded on VHS!) But yeah, I had many an argument with my sister as a kid about whether or not he was an alien (I was team alien), the thing that swayed it for me was how he reacts to technology (or rather, how technology reacts to him!), although a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is needed, as most of the logic/physics might as well be lifted out of a cartoon! By the way, whenever you hear a mumbling male voice in the background (like the vicar in this case), it's Rowan Atkinson playing them as well!

David Lyons

Yeah, the laughter track is awful in this. Never bothered me at the time but I found it extremely irritating this time around!

BigChanChan

This is quite nostalgic for me as I was a kid when I first watched them and vividly remember them being on ITV and watching their very first broadcast. My favourite episode is the Christmas one. For many years it ceased to be on my radar but watching this back now it's better than I remember. It is all visual humour by-and-large, but many of the set ups and payoffs are quite clever really, and Rowan Atkinson is a naturally funny person - he just has funny bones. Amazing that he can play such dry, witty, intelligent characters and yet slip so easily into the limited mind and body of a man-boy such as Mr Bean. Your comment Josh about his acting like a kid is spot on. Atkinson even said that this is one of the key aspects of his personality - he's like a 9 year old boy trapped in the body of a 35 year old man. Howard Goodall composed the choral theme music at the start, the very same composer as for Blackadder and Red Dwarf. The words you hear sung are in Latin: Ecce Homo qui est faba = Behold the man who is a bean. In later episodes - not a spoiler as Josh never watches the end credits anyway - haha - and it's not anything to do with the plot or characters...... but the same / very similar theme is used to close the show, with the lyrics: Vale Homo qui est faba = Farewell the man who is a bean. These little details and bits of trivia probably don't mean much to most but I love them! :-D

Ash Jeffries

throwing a shoe at someones face is an extreme reaction for falling asleep in church my god! XD

Austin Stratton

The clip of him meeting the Queen IS from the show.. I remember having all the VHS tapes as a kid, all different colours and that green was my favourite XD I don't remember why or which episodes were on it.. juts that green was the best XD

Austin Stratton

Wow I didn't expect to remember this so vividly! My brother and I used to LOVE this as kids but I haven't watched it since then. He's even weirder than I remember 😂

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Great tv fun for all. I forgot how funny this is, also enjoyed your experiences as a young Josh in church lol looking forward to more of the talented Rowan Atkinson

Andrew G

Hey Josh, I'm so glad Mr bean finally won the poll. The thing you must remember is this show is old school visual humour, it's not supposed to be witty or clever, it's just silly. You were correct about him being an alien, Richard Curtis who wrote the show has said that several times over the years

Stu 79

There are lots of theories that go around about the intro another one is he his falling from heaven (which would make more sense because of the choir music) and that they kicked him out for being annoying. Also just fyi the words the choir are singing at the beginning are ‘Ecce homo qui est faba’ which roughly translates as " ‘Behold the man who is a bean’

Awesome…haven’t seen these for years! This one is funny but very much a pilot episode…the next handful are just excellent 😂. It’s not obvious here but the blind guy on the beach is Richie & Eddie’s landlord in Bottom. You should spot a very familiar face in the next episode!

Ben Marshall

Ive never heard it meant to be anyone. Its always been a mystery driver

Danny

Its not a Robin, its a Reliant Regal. The deluxe version of it, if you will, is the same model as the Trotters van

Danny

Mr Beans mini is well known for being green but is bean coloured in this episode. The 3 wheeled car, Regal, is supposed to be according to one theory, driven by Mr Sprout who is played by a well known British actor called Richard Briers in the church scene in this episode.

Handheld Games

And to think this episode is probably the TAMEST of the lot! Also side note... haven't watched the series in years and reminded me how crazy 80s/90s comedy canned laughter was, it's a bit distracting but still an ace series nonetheless!

Michael Hartley

The clip you saw of Mr Bean in line is actually the end skit in the next episode

Danny

The guy next to Mr Bean in church is Richard Briers, a classic British actor, you will know him older as the actor in Extras who takes the Ray doll at the award show and keeps stamping on it 😂

Danny

Rowan Atkinson has acknowledged that Mr. Bean "has an alien aspect to him". In the animated series (episode, "Double Trouble") he is taken inside a spacecraft with "aliens" who look exactly like him and even have their own plushy toys.

AWR93

Mr. Bean IS an alien, that wasn't a joke.

JokerDanny

Ye I feel mr beans holiday is a lot more like the series then the first film. I like both. But the second film is a lot more true to the character

Andrew Cardinal

Hey Josh, have you given much more thought to allocating one day to a show of your own choosing? with 6 days of other people choosing shows/ a movie for you, I really think a lot of your patrons would love to see what you choose yourself. Also, regarding Mr. Bean, I didn't vote for it but I'm going to enjoy watching it again, it may actually be the first comedy I ever saw as it's a show I remember from when I was very very young, I have very fond memories of it. Sidenote; I loved your embarrassing childhood church story lol, it's cool to hear stories like that in your reactions!

Ben

The other mr bean movie is very good Mr Beans Holiday. The Robin Reliant is a bit of a running gag in the show, Mr Bean always messes with the car causing it to crash.

Thomas Newell

Can you also react to the other Mr bean film, Mr beans holiday 💯

Jake Harrison

Hope you enjoy it :), I haven’t watched this in years. I use to be a bit obsessed with it , when I was younger .

Andrew Cardinal
