The Royle Family Season 2 Episode 6 Antonys Birthday

Comments

This is perhaps my favorite Royle Family episode of the main series. Ricky's banjo playing, Peter Martin's genuinely very good singing and Andy Whyment's timing for the payoff at the end. It's just all perfect. And if you grew up on an estate in England, meeting the family at an occasion like this for Emma, it just couldn't be more accurate.

lol i used to love the fast show, but im afraid i was very... very drunk.

Suits you, sir https://youtu.be/FmwQD1Y2k6g

Another absolute better of an episode, sublimely written and performed, thereโ€™s so much of this that could just be taken verbatim from my life growing up and for many others (which is why itโ€™s so relatable, itโ€™s just so real, despite being a tightly scripted comedy).

I agree so gross ๐Ÿคข

Great reaction, Josh! Love this episode! Darren's line at the end after three emotive minutes listening to Joe singing was just so funny, perfectly timed too! :D Sheridan Smith plays Emma (Antony's girlfriend) here. I half expected you to recognise her from Gavin & Stacey, but in absolute fairness, she's quite a bit younger here and does look quite different I think. I can tell it's the same person but I've seen her in so many things so I'm more familiar I suppose! The finest thing you will ever see her in is Series 2, episode 2 of Inside No. 9 if ever you get around to watching that - written by Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton (two of the three acting League of Gentlemen). It's an amazing 30 minutes. Quite extraordinary. I love the way this show has the confidence to drag out certain parts - other writers might not wish to do that, but Caroline and Craig rely on the groundwork and investment in the characters having already been done and that the viewers care enough to stay with it. So we do listen to that whole song without fidgeting because it's an unusual moment for Joe, and it means so much to Nana. The next episode is my personal favourite of the whole series. Cannot, cannot wait to re-watch it. There's a piece of music used in one scene that I believe will have been replaced for copyright which is a shame as the original piece used is far more effective, but it's a wonderful episode anyway, and that's all I'll say for now!

The dog shit with the knife in the sink makes my stomach turn every time ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคข

The length of that song is what makes the joke at the end so funny. A bit like Stewart Lee when he takes ages to set up his punchlines and that being part of the joke.

Chris

Is there any episode that Jim doesn't have a turtle head touching the cloth ๐Ÿ˜…

BigChanChan

Joe has a nice voice, my jaw nearly hit the floor when he first started singing. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Lee

And Nana's insinuation that if the ham is thin enough it'll somehow be fine xD

Balkyne

Yeah she looks terrible post surgery. Such a shame because she really was just naturally pretty :(

Balkyne

Great episode and that ending was perfect. I'm surprised you didn't recognise the girl who's dating Anthony. She's the actress Sheridan Smith, who plays Smithy's Sister in Gavin & Stacey.

Jay

I have to say I didn't realise how good this show was at the time but thanks to you Josh I'm bloody loving it! I'm a guitar player and I just purchased a banjo... Iinspired of course by Jim!

Matt Anderson

Always made me laugh when Emma tells them sheโ€™s vegetarian and they talk her like itโ€™s an unfortunate illness.

David Harman

I remember watching this episode when it first aired and being doubled over with laughter when Nana says "of course he wants it, it's his birthday present".

The Fast Show was the nuts! Still put an episode on from time to time. In addition (Josh), Johnny Depp was a MASSIVE fan on The Fast Show and credits Paul Whitehouse as the best actor he's ever seen. Depp also featured in one of the sketches 'Suits you Sir', which was referenced in this Royale Family episode. You'll have seen Paul Whitehouse in your previous Fast Show, and Harry Enfield reactions.

Steve Read

I had a huuuge crush on Sheridan Smith (Emma) growing up.. Especially through the 2 pints years.. Don't know what has happened to her recently though.. lot's of plastic surgery.. she was so naturally pretty, shame.

Austin Stratton

The "suits you" exchange between Antony and Darren was a reference to a catchphrase in The Fast Show, which had aired a couple of years earlier and was still pretty popular at this point. Caroline Aherne (Denise) was also in The Fast Show before doing The Royle Family, and Craig Cash (Dave) and Henry Normal were both writers on it. I think Darren is possibly my favourite recurring character in The Royle Family, his almost complete apathy to everything going on around him is hilarious, I think all of us have known someone like that growing up. And he delivers one of the absolute best punchlines of the series here.

Charlie

The silly back and forth thing Anthony and Darren are doing is a sketch from the TV Comedy sketch show 'The Fast Show', of which Caroline Ahern (Denise) is a star of.

Wilss

Muck for luck.
