Spoiler Free:  This was a good start to a new series.

Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

There weren't as many funny moments as I expected. This in no way devalues the show, I just expected more funny moments because of the messages I have received. This was a good start to the series, they introduce some core characters and the plot what more can you ask for. There were a few funny moments, the funniest was Lister continually listing off names while the computer says everyone is dead lol. After going back to the funeral scene I am only 50% sure that was the welsh flag because I can only see half of the canister lol.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

As always I would love to read your comments below

Red Dwarf Season 1 Episode 1 The End

Comments

Decided to start watching it with you Josh ๐Ÿ’ฏ

LOL

After Work Reactions

Cunt alert.

NEXUS

Thanks man I am looking forward to checking this out I have been hearing for months that it is a great show.

After Work Reactions

Really excited you're onto to this. Looking forward to working your way through the wonderful world of Red Dwarf. To me, Series 1-2 focuses on the concept on the concept of "Two people who really hate each other trapped alone forever". Much more focus on Lister and Rimmer. Whereas later series focus more on adventures through space. Both are good for their reasons...

Matthew Seaward

That is awesome. I feel that same nostalgia for Star Trek. I am looking forward to it man thanks =]

After Work Reactions

LOL thanks for the info bud I appreciate it.

After Work Reactions

Thanks bud enjoy =]

After Work Reactions

That is very clever, hilarious and gross lol.

After Work Reactions

i dare you to stay till the end and say that again lol

martyn dodds

Most overrated TV series ever, was funny when i was about 10 years old. Not sure how anyone finds it funny but everyone is different. Just hope you do as there is loads of episodes.

NEXUS

its the Netflix version, they even had to change the funereal song because Netflix couldn't get the rights for the original song, so they had to go with see ya later alligator

martyn dodds

Does anyone know if that was the remasteered version we just watched? Some of that background music was not familiar to me and a little jarring to be honest. They even played it over the "everybody's dead, Dave" bit. Seasons 1-2 are good plot-driven character-based stuff, but it definitely becomes more out and out funny later on

Gareth Jones

Lister was one of my idols growing up lol. There was always something else about this show that made it more than just a comedy to me. I rewatched the first 6 series on vhs countless times, it wasn't particularly for the laughs, it was more like just wanting to hang out with these guys in space with no worries or responsibilities. Hope you enjoy this one, its gonna be good to watch it through with someone new again.

Sean O'Donnell

Been looking forward to your reactions on red dwarf! Seasons 1-6 get the most love, but I really enjoy the latest seasons from 10 onwards. Season 8 is ok and you'll have to do a bit of research about the actors before season 9. Season 7 has two or three good episodes but it is definitely the smeggiest IMO. Still excited go through them all again from the beginning watching your reaction and reading everyone's comments!

Alex

I missed out on this on my childhood and only in the past year or 2 watched this for the first time. You cant judge the show by it's first ever episode, it is just setting the scene and characters. But if you stick with it, it's really funny. If it's your type of show

Martyn

So damn excited for us to start this!!!

Conal Brady

YIKES, this was TERRIBLE. Can ANYONE who watches this for the first time now in 2020(and not for nostalgic reasons) find this worthy of an 8.4 imdb score and funny?

Dandelion

Smeg. This was a word used by the writers to get past the BBC censors because in those days you weren't allowed to swear. Anyway, the meaning of the word is more disgusting than most other swear word because it describes... a certain kind of residue. Maybe google it.

Ian Webster

There's no schedule for movies I react to them when I have time to fit them in. The Inbetweeners 2 will be posted later today.

After Work Reactions

Josh what happen you stop reacting to movies

Best Pranks 69

It's just 1, think he forgot the 2.

dbnu

Just clocked the guy in cafeteria scene with the coin is Mr Wesley lol

Liam O'Donnell

That is awesome bud! Hope you enjoy.

After Work Reactions

I will for sure have to check those out once I am past S6.

After Work Reactions

LOL thanks bud!

After Work Reactions

Thanks man, I will add that to my list!

After Work Reactions

Thank you, I don't need a show to be super hilarious the whole time. Sometimes when a show is that way you miss some parts of the story. As long as it is enjoyable then it is all good for me.

After Work Reactions

Thanks for the info bud! I have been hearing season 3+ is really good.

After Work Reactions

That is awesome! It for sure is kitschy but I did like it alot.

After Work Reactions

Thanks man!

After Work Reactions

Thanks man!

After Work Reactions

Thanks man I am looking forward to it, Sci-fi has been a life long love for me so I think it's going to be great =]

After Work Reactions

Thanks for the info bud! I am excited for this show I have been hearing for months that it is great.

After Work Reactions

Looking forward to it bud!

After Work Reactions

Thanks bud!

After Work Reactions

Thanks man I agree I do think it takes a bit for a show to really get good. Which is ok, it takes time for you to love characters.

After Work Reactions

Ok cool beans man thanks!

After Work Reactions

I have been hearing that but It is all good man most shows start off that way.

After Work Reactions

Daily Motion Password not working

Contex - It's Just A Ride

grandtheftadmin

so excited for the whole series!

TheHigh

S1 /S2 are some of my favourites

mwdoom

Yeah it's 100% a setup episode, and done very cleverly. Where the biggest payoff is arguably not the comedy, but the "oh shit" moment you get when you have the rug pulled out from under you. Where about 2/3rds of the characters you've just been introduced to and familiarized with are killed off.

Paul Hunn

Me too, I prefer the old porridge style comedy of the first 2 series. Love it all though.

Wilss

I'm so glad you're doing Red Dwarf. One of my favourite shows. I love the first episode but it's more of a scene setter than a comedic tour de force. I love the first series, so many clever ideas in the upcoming episodes.

James Nicholls

I'll parrot what everyone else is saying, and tell you that the series really doesn't grab you until the end of the second series. And not only is it incredibly funny when it gets going, it gets a lot smarter and plays with a lot of science fiction and philosophical tropes in ingenious (and funny) ways. It loses its way a bit after series 7, as one of the two main writers/creators left the show, but by this stage you'll still enjoy many of the later episodes (though not as much as previous ones) due to a familiarity and fondness for the four principle characters.

Rob Thompson

Not bad considering it's taken 30+ plus years for the rest us to get to this point LOL

Steve King

also glad you liked the everybody is dead dave bit, that is an iconic moment for us red dwarf fans.

martyn dodds

defo agree

martyn dodds

I'm really glad you started Red Dwarf but at 1 episode a week, you're gonna be watching this for like 2 years! You'll love it though :-)

Jack Morgan

First season is a slow burn, the first season makes it so you can call the rest of the red dwarf story LORE. thats how awesome it is. After season one i think the show really finds it feet and knows the direction it wants to take. Im glad to see you finally coming round it Josh. man i remember having a tiny red dwarf ship figurine years ago from a fantasy shop, cant believe i lost it

Michael

I was waiting for someone to tell him what that meant... ๐Ÿคฃ

Daryl

Thereโ€™s also the difference that theyโ€™re written by a large and ever-revolving writing room, where itโ€™s all about one-liners and gags a minute; British shows have one or two main writers, sometimes the only writers, and story and character is much more important than cramming in as many jokes as you can in 20 minutes

Kieran B

well it is cold outside so he needs to listen to it ;) so much nostalgia on that song from when i was a kid.

martyn dodds

Josh, I would be very surprised if you don't find yourself really enjoying this show a lot. Like so many shows the first and early episodes establish the characters and the situation they find themselves in. Of all the shows that you have reviewed so far this is definitely my favourite.

Jake Cross

And so a wonderful journey begins...

Don Roshi

Season 2-6 are AMAZING, and Smeg is short for Smegma (google it, it's disgusting) Dickcheese would be my best summation.

Richard Carter

Yeah, thatโ€™s a Welsh flag and the hologram has a Welsh accent.

Leon Tallis

RD is a strange show in the way it changes over the years. Series 1-2 have a very different feel to 3-6 and so on. Series 5 is my all time favourite but love the vast majority of it. The novels written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are really good too.

Mark Carr

As everyone else has said, it does improve over time. It has it's really funny moments but it's never really laugh a minute. I'd say it's really entertaining and enjoyable to watch rather than hilarious. I love it. Looking forward to watching it all over again and I think you'll really enjoy it tbh :)

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Iโ€™m sure I wonโ€™t be the only person to say this, but the show doesnโ€™t even really begin until you hit season 3 (although season 2 is a marked improvement on the first) From then on however,it just gets better and better and better, to the point where I would consider it one of my all time favourites. Whatever you do, see the show through; donโ€™t give up on it before it really starts. Also, although completely unrelated to Red Dwarf, I would seriously recommend that you check out โ€œCouplingโ€ at some point; itโ€™s like an incredibly adult version of friends, and I swear to god, no show has made me laugh hysterically more than that one; it was pure genius.

Gordon Rankin

Great reaction, Josh! I've been really looking forward to rewatching this! As others have said, it does get off to a slow (and somewhat low budget) start but you will enjoy it anyway as the whole premise seems to be right up your street, and you'll be rewarded for sticking with it once you get to series 3 onwards (series 3-6 are Red Dwarf at its very best!). I know you're not into watching the end credits but if you could just listen to / watch them even once for Red Dwarf, that'd be cool! It's such a funky, catchy and iconic theme song. :-)

Ash Jeffries

haha thats a good way to put it.

martyn dodds

Just going to reiterate what other people have said it takes off at season 2 just use the first season as getting to know their personalities etc. I think one of the main differences between America and British TV is these shows are allowed to mature here, I presume it is a hell of a lot more expensive to put something on TV over in the states so it has to be just right before it is aired and if it isn't an instant success they just cancel it , you get to kind of see the work in progress in British TV so many shows start quite slow.

Josh, man....you've got so many good episodes coming up. It get's better and better. By the way...that's MY first time watching that episode. In fact, i cant remember much of this first series....so I'll be reacting along.

Hannah

good reaction mate, yeah this is a slow start i think all the red dwarf fans knew that it wouldn't grab you on the first one but it will defo pick up in a while, these ones are basically introducing you to the characters and their traits which imo is what makes the show so much better later on, this show has some of the best character going i thin. put it this way, this episode was made in 1988 and the last episode they done was april this year so they wouldn't be going on this long if it wasn't good :)

martyn dodds

it's definitely a real audience, in a recent documentary they said they did re-shoots on the first episode and the laughs they got from the audience was bigger than the first go. Laughter tracks don't bother me too much, think they give a communal experience like theatre, but they seem to be on the decline these days

Adam C Turek

Love the early Dwarf. Once you get past season 6 it's worth giving two books or audiobooks a try, they give a bit more depth to it all.

Mr K

"What's a Smeg Head?" you Sir asked a good question, but I shan't answer it... The first series is a bit drier compared to what the show will become, but you've got a lot to look forward too.

Adam C Turek

I remember watching the first episode back in '88. My brother and I were hooked coz it was so different. Yes it's a bit low budget at first and the acting is a bit stilted but does get better and better. Love Chris (rimmer) Barrie he had that uptight basil fawlty vibe!

Claire Prowse

Just to echo others - Series 1 is a bit slow, but the series picks up from Series 2 onwards. 1 still has some good moments though.

BertFredStan

The first episode is what killed FireFly, If it was made in the UK, we'd have a 2nd series :) And to everyone in the UK, watch FireFly

๐™ถ๐šŠ๐š›๐šข ๐™ผ๐š˜๐š›๐š๐šŠ๐š—

Yeah, if I recall, the first few episodes set up the premise, and the characters. Ha! the cast is a lot bigger in the beginning.

๐™ถ๐šŠ๐š›๐šข ๐™ผ๐š˜๐š›๐š๐šŠ๐š—

I think you're getting the measure of a lot of British comedies now. Often times they start slow and build up as you get to know the characters. Luckily you're someone who is willing to stick with it and let the show hook you.

Michael Harrop

'Smeg' and 'Smeghead' is their version of sneaking swearing in the show. Kind of like 'Frak' in Battlestar Galactica.

Michael Harrop

First episode is the most slow actually, it gets better when it picks up pace

Carl-Fredrik L

It's definitely a bit of a slower start. I have a lot of affection for the first episode but its hard to deny its not firing on all cylinders yet, it has a lot of plot to set up the status quo premise for the rest of the show so has to explain a lot more than future episodes which leaves less room for comedy. Danger of having some extremely unusual plot that needs setting up for a sitcom you can't just be dropped in the first episode within the status quo. The first couple of seasons are a little rougher, low budget and not fully formed, but it gets much better and there are many many classic moments in them. Season 3 to 6 however it really finds its feet and becomes some of the best British comedy ever, fusing high concept sci-fi ideas with classic British comedy. Despite S3-S6 being the 'golden age' in many ways I have more love for the first two series though, so don't worry there'll be plenty there to get your teeth into :D

lemmy101

One of my all time favourite shows, it definitely takes a few series to get to its best episodes. Really looking forward to watching it from the start again!

Ella Eske

Itโ€™s gets so much better from the second series onwards.

Jay C

I never found the show funny, but I just liked the atmosphere. My main problem is having the audience laughter or laugh track, whatever they used. It ruins the show like The Big Bang Theory, trying to make unfunny things funny. They got rid of it for a season or two if I remember rightly, though I don't remember if it improved it or not. I said before I don't think you'll like the show, it's more wacky than funny. Though you'll probably get to like the characters and just like it like a stupid version of Star Trek or something lol.

Yeah, Red Dwarf is another one of those shows that had kind of a muted start, but then finds its feet later on and gets funnier. And, yes, that is a Welsh flag :)

Stuart Fewtrell

You will love this show weather you find it funny or not josh ๐Ÿ‘
