I LOVE that Rask and Seral are framed beside each other in the last panels. Both of them walked away from a task to kill someone their community decided didn't deserve to live, to "prove" their worth and "protect" their home, an act that was supposed to solidify their standing with their new families. I am actually very invested in Seral's arc too and excited to see what happens to him throughout all this change. And I love that Swift's nuclear family here has become such a catalyst to this social and political upheaval on several different sides, just by trying to survive. Feel there's some kind of irony in that xD

2023-08-29 00:08:40 +0000 UTCI think it's fair to say Red's standing in the pack was dramatically reduced when he lost his ability to hunt-- which is probably why both Gristle and Seral felt within their rights to make deals with the new pack behind Swift's back. She's 'weakened' by his disability in their eyes, since she doesn't have a partner who can physically back her/fight along side her.

Since in reality a wolf pack’s breeding pair would carry all the authority, that means Red must have been on equal standing with Swift at some point. Is that still true or because he’s “dead” is he no more significant than any other pack member in terms of hierarchy? Either way, it would still be a pretty bold more for Seral to kill Red, even if he’s technically already “dead.”

Also, he's well aware Seral is leaving to find the pups, since they'll be easier to kill. That's why he's calling him a coward, since he's letting the new pack leaders kill Red while he deals with the helpless pups.

I suspected that he is not exactly a fan of killing his packmates, so Red's words apparently had some impact on him. Now I'm only worried what happenes if he finds the pups...

If he didn't have the guts to kill Red, and what he said clearly struck a nerve (though he would never admit it) he might hesitate to hurt the cubs as well. Though he has alot riding on him to kill the cubs, Red was never specifically instructed to die... So he might steel himself even harder for it. How suspenseful!
