There’s a lot of ways this can go wrong, but I think there’s some compelling reasons for Red to survive, too. He’s not going to be able to travel as far as Swift wants to go. So, if he makes it, they’ll end up in the forest and encounter the animals from the Stone Hollow at some point. An injured wolf isn’t a threat because, frankly, as long as prey doesn’t get too close, Red is too slow to catch them. And the pups are too young to be dangerous. Swift is the only threat to the prey animals, but I think her desire to protect Red and the pups is strong enough that she’s going to try to defend them rather than attack if she’s cornered by a bunch of spear-wielding squirrels and chipmunks. She’s also more open minded than the other wolves so she’s going to look for alternatives instead of throwing herself into a fight. I think between Red being injured and more approachable and the pups being young enough to learn a different mindset towards prey, it would make a fairly natural segue into larger predators joining the Stone Hollow. Also I like Red and I hope he makes it. He’s sweet.
