They dound very much like normal japanese idols. It's literally the same sound as AKB48 or the anime Idolm@ster.

I agree on all your areas of confusion; the lead up made it even stranger when the song actually started.
I do wonder if the J-pop audience informed a lot of the more cutesy decisions around the song. They definitely have some room to grow in maturity as a group, I think.

Your confusion confused me! Lol The song, for me, was executed well in almost all areas. As well as being more interesting and better than many in areas like mixing... Btw I'm not a fan of kawaii performances. Although I don't follow J-pop (see above); this seems to be perfect for that market.
Jason, another Korean music you-tuber acquaintance just asked his followers if he should start doing J-pop content (He's done a bit already, mostly in a comparative to K-pop fashion) . He should be a a good source since I think he spent almost an equal time in Japan as a freelance music writer as the 5 years he spent in Seoul.
