He’s missing an eye due to a “candy accident” but he tells the children who come into his store all different stories like “I lost my eye while ringing with a grizzly bear!” because he’s scared that if he tells children that he lost his eye due to a candy accident, the children might become scared of candy and will stop coming to his store to buy his candy.
