2024-08-06 17:43:58 +0000 UTCI think that the Talos Principle (1 and 2) actually make you accept that AI are conscious as a premise of the setting, as opposed to arguing for its validity. I've just recently been writing about these games, so I'll share some thoughts: Your character in the Talos Principle is an AI, and you're seeing through it's eyes with your human consciousness as a real person playing a video game. But in order to have any narrative buy-in and immersion in the world, you have to suspend your disbelief that the AI character you are playing as is itself conscious as well; you recast "your consciousness as a player" as "the AI's consciousness as a character." This is just a part of the process of buying in to the world of the story. But the game then goes forward to advance the argument that a sufficiently complex AI would be conscious in real life, as if it were a forgone conclusion, and from there to conclude that materialist metaphysics is true. All on the basis of something you had to accept *without argument* at the beginning, just as part of suspending your disbelief to get invested in the story and characters.It's actually pretty sneaky! To popcorn off of Matt: It's like making Finding Nemo and having the audience suspend their disbelief in talking fish in order to become invested in the story, but then the message of the story starts to imply to the audience conclusions such as "fish talk, and therefore have human intelligence, and therefore should have the rights of human citizens," with the seriousness of points meant to be taken as real-life philosophical positions, as opposed to thinks only being argued for in-fiction.
