Hey guys, I took your advice and watched the 1931 version of Jekyll and Hyde, and woweee, you were right. That was definitely disturbing. Really great but also disturbing.

The transition from Cockney dandy to gangster in popular imagination might be due to Cockney Rhyming Slang. In case anyone isn’t familiar, rhyming slang consists of a two word phrase where the second word rhymes with the word the slang replaces. Often, this second word is dropped, leaving only the first, non-rhyming word. For example ‘make her a cup of Rosie, she’s in a right two and eight - her syrup fell off when she was coming down the apples’ Rosie = Rosie Lee = tea Two and eight = state Syrup = syrup and fig = wig Apples = apples and pears = stairs This form of slang was used by the lower classes to communicate in a way the wealthier Londoners would not understand. For example, market traders could shout messages to each other about someone with more money than sense who was passing through, or warn them if the police were approaching. Obviously this kind of semi secret language served criminals well and made for a good on-screen character trait. More modern uses of the slang includes suggesting someone doesn’t have a Scooby (Doo - clue) or are a Jeremy Hunt (former British Health secretary).
