How close is unknown, but in Japan "cousin" often gets used even for family friends or branch families. Like in kaguya sama, maki and kaguya are called "cousins" but they're not blood related at all. I just want to head off any misunderstanding that this causes in advance. It's obvious they aren't direct relations tho.

But he is fully aware now…
