Our Magic Item Cards are objects in our world, usually accompanying the series we tackle that month. The item might help you visualize the world and its creations better: add items for effects on your players, add them to your treasure box for flavor, or use them as a quest item.

Gourd of Capture

Wondrous Item | Very Rare | Requires Attunement

This mystical gourd can trap and contain the unconscious. Its smooth surface is adorned with golden calligraphy, which glows faintly when activated.

  • Capture Shadows. As an Action, you can open the gourd and target an unconscious or incapacitated creature within 30 feet. The target is sucked into the gourd by black shadows and remains inside for up to 7 days. The target remains unconscious or incapacitated while inside the gourd, and the gourd can only hold one creature at a time.

  • If the target regains consciousness inside the gourd, it may attempt a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw once per day. The DC is lowered by 1 for each day that passes as the gourd’s hold weakens. On a success, the target escapes the gourd, appearing in the nearest unoccupied space.

    The gourd cannot trap creatures of Legendary status or those immune to magical imprisonment. Any creature with a challenge rating of 9 or higher has Advantage on the saving throw to escape.

  • Release. As an Action, you can release the creature trapped inside. It appears in the nearest unoccupied space from the gourd. If the creature is not released within 7 days or when its attuned creature loses consciousness, it is automatically ejected, appearing in the nearest unoccupied space.

Monkey King's Defiance

Armor (Shoulder pad) | Very Rare | Requires Attunement

Blessed by the Monkey King, this golden shoulder pad gleams with a faint but reassuring light. It is designed to offer swift protection, deflect attacks, and grant heightened defense against powerful foes.

You gain a +1 bonus to your Armor Class while wearing this shoulder pad.

Deflecting Blow. When hit by a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage by 1d8 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Dexterity modifier (minimum of 1), regaining all expended uses after a long rest.

Heaven Defying. While wearing Monkey King's Defiance, you gain resistance to damage from Celestials and Dragons. This blessing forms an invisible barrier around you, reducing their harmful effects.

Iron Fan of the Wind Princess

Weapon (Fan, 2d4 bludgeoning, Heavy, two-handed) | Very Rare | Requires Attunement

The legendary Iron Fan Princess once wielded this elegant yet powerful iron fan. The fan appears delicate, with intricate designs of swirling winds and mythical creatures etched onto its surface, but it is deceptively strong.

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

  • Cyclone Strike. When you make a melee attack with the fan, you can choose to create a whirlwind. The target hit by the whirlwind takes an additional 2d4 force damage and must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked back 20 feet. 

If the target collides with an object, wall, or another creature after being knocked back, all involved take an additional 2d4 bludgeoning damage and are knocked prone. A creature in the path of the knockback can make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw to avoid being collided with.

Wondrous Item (Headgear) | Legendary | Requires Attunement

This shimmering golden headband said to be a replica of the one worn by the legendary Monkey King, contracts and expands at will, binding the wearer with powerful mental magic.

You gain a +1 bonus to your Armor Class while wearing this headband.

  • Golden Circlet. Once per day, as an Action, you can cast the Dominate Person spell (Wisdom save DC 17) without using a spell slot. While maintaining concentration on the spell, the headband tightens around your head, causing you to take 1d4 psychic damage at the start of each of your turns.
