Jamie Lanister (the guy Eddard was fighting) is one of the best swordsmen in the kingdom and is extremely prideful so he's actually not happy his guard interfered as he was sure he would have won anyway. Also, Robert is a pretty bad king, but he was once a great warrior who united the different kingdoms in rebellion so war is probably one of the only things he's good at. He's right to be worried about an invasion.
