Ash is a newb, but he's picking up the finer points of Pokemon mastery quite well!

ASH IS LEARNING! - Pokemon 1x4

Comments

Next episode is gonna be the first major episode introducing an important member to the cast.

Also Metpod Evolving into Butterfree so quickly is a nod to the games were Caterpie's line alongside Weedles are the lowest level Pokemon to reach their final stage. Both Caterpie and Weedle evolved into Metapod and Kakuna at Level 7 and then into Butterfree and Beedrill at Level 10.

Give Team Rocket time, especially James, by the later seasons, they go from smarmy to so pathetic they become lovable.

With this and the Persona 5 stream, it's like you're trying to appeal to me specifically. It might as well be my birthday.

So just a little bit of context for this episode, if you were playing the games and encountered a wild Metapod, the only move it knows is "Harden" which is a move that raises defence. The battle between Ash and the Samurai is just an inside joke of what would happen if 2 Metapods battled each other. Another thing to note is that if a trainer catches a Caterpie first and evolves it into a Metapod in "Red & Blue" versions it will only have Caterpies moveset not knowing "Harden" at all, this was then updated in "Yellow" version so that Metapod would learn "Harden" when it evolves. Here in the Anime (that won't quite follow the rules of the games at times) we see Metapod using both "Harden" in the Samurai battle and then "Tackle" against the Beedrill when defending Ash.

So What happened in this episode? Ash and another trainer have a battle seeing who can get harder... and the other trainer shows Ash his sword... well then, moving on, yes bug pokemon are pretty common early in the games because of how fast they evolve, to introduce the concept to new players, you can usually fully evolve them before your first gym because of that, compared to your starter that can take maybe half the game.

It still "Bugs" me that Ash never caught one of the sleeping Beedrills, such a "novice trainer".
