While Maomao might not be so bold as to wipe her fingers on an official's headdress. It is the level of inappropriate behaviour she might engage in. For example that look she gets whenever she sees herbs. Also the bit about a new hallucinogenic ruining their country. That's actually what happened to China IRL in the early 1800s. The British started importing opium which lead to the Opium Wars. Opium use became such an epidemic in China that, when the British captured Chinese positions they often found Opium pipes spread throughout. The Chinese were defeated often because their troops were often too stoned to fight. In a war specifically to stop the importation of Opium. Eventually the British and the Chinese ended up signing a treaty. That ceded the Island of Hong Kong to the British and opened five treaty ports (including Shanghai) for trade with the West.

2024-10-09 19:02:16 +0000 UTCSo this is slightly cut out from the anime but Maomao started sharing her... training books, with the emperor at some point, so he keeps asking her for more, and unless I'm misremembering... she also started drawing... certain lewd imagery for him as well, because of how good an artist she can be. the thing about dying roses via their stems is actually something my high school did for biology class, so it's kind of neat seeing the idea used here, it's a simple but cool trick.
