THE MOST BOGUS COPYRIGHT CLAIM EVER!
Added 2024-06-29 10:02:00 +0000 UTCI thought you guys would be interested to know that we just got another copyright claim at MEGA. This company representing MGM just filed a claim against a video that contained nothing but my face and voice! Last month's episodes of STARGATE SG-1 was, of course, just face cam and timer so people could sync up and watch along with me. These scumbags went ahead and filed a copyright claim anyway!
Of course, I've already filed a counter-complaint, and there's no action against our MEGA account, as it takes 3 claims for them to take action, but I am furious about this whole thing and just thought I'd share this with you guys!
Apparently, they don't bother to watch videos they file claims against; they simply read titles and go ahead, as they know they won't face any consequences for bogus claims.
These companies making a complete mockery of the DMCA system has got to stop at some point!

I worked in Hollywood, primarily production and finance, for almost a decade. The copyright claims will always exist because it gives a lot of companies room to create losses from copyright infringements. These numbers will always be far larger than the actual money they would lose. Walgreens and CVS use this methodology in SHRINK.

2024-06-29 22:27:53 +0000 UTCThis copywrite claim culture is beyond ridiculous. I saw somewhere that a streamer did a reaction on stream, and the original poster got a strike because the system identified the streamer's reaction to the video as his content and the OP just re-uploaded it. SMH

2024-06-29 18:02:34 +0000 UTCIt's so sad this happens to creators like you, Curtis, who respect copyright and don't just let it play while eating like xQc/Pokimane, etc. Although every company should verify the videos they claim, streamers like the ones mentioned ruin things for a lot of creators, i imagine.

2024-06-29 17:48:55 +0000 UTCif they just read the titles without checking the video, does that mean you can just upload the original reactions with the video and change the title and they'll never find out?

2024-06-29 14:06:33 +0000 UTCthere need to be rules for companies making bogus claims akin to fraud and soon, it does real damage. They probably have bots doing it, not even worth the effort for them but enough to ruin the account of someone following the rules.

2024-06-29 12:38:05 +0000 UTCActually, they likely find the vids through a bot crawling the internet or through one of the sites where people post Patreon material... And even though this has happened twice, it's always been the same company, coming after the same series.

2024-06-29 12:22:30 +0000 UTCBleach got hit here at Patreon with a copyright claim. Those claims were well-researched, unlike what's going on with Stargate. Bleach will not be coming back, as I'm not gonna jeopardize the GOOSH's very existence.

2024-06-29 11:43:46 +0000 UTCYeah, and your case is also more difficult to swap with most of the content being placed on mega already and linked up to patreon. I've been able to say the same for both as well, but personally I just feel like mega is going to have to cave just like how youtube did back in 2016 with too many lawsuits against them from companies. The fact this has now happened twice to you in the last 6 months at least to me could not be more evident that somethings been happening with mega. I mean the video that was claimed as far as I'm aware has a link that is only accessible through patreon, which leaves the question how did they actually get the link. I've not known companies previously at any rate to join as a member just to flag the video. So my speculation is that either mega is providing companies access to view potentially copyrighted materials to private files or patreon is, or perhaps they did just join up to flag it or got sent an email. Who can actually say. All in all, just figured I'd share what I was planning since this came up for you again. Different circumstances though.

2024-06-29 11:24:43 +0000 UTCI actually know how to do all that, but in fairness, both MEGA and Patreon - unlike YouTube - have had my back on these. To me, they are worth what they get in exchange for providing these services for me.

2024-06-29 11:19:00 +0000 UTCIt's for stupid reasons like this I've just opted to start doing self hosting. This way they can't take action as easily as they do with the hosting services and it reduces my monthly bill to these platforms. And it's honestly not as hard as you may think. Also at a point where I'm about to ditch patreon as well in favor of a website that just runs video ads either at the beginning or at the end. Then I can just direct people from youtube which is already ad based to my website which would also be video ad based through adsense so more people can get exposure to it via youtube > website. The issue with youtube and how it lead to most youtube channels going the patreon route was mainly as a result of content ID being way strict. But with a website, you can completely eliminate the monthly charge for mega and get in theory every viewer that would be on youtube to your website instead because it's all free minus the ads, the same as youtube minus content ID. This + self hosting = less easy for companies to take action against you, a removed fee from mega, no patreon fee per payout as I opt for a website instead again through adsense, and more accessibility for people on youtube to view the website. Downsides would be needing to buy a mid grade server you just put up at your house, run a wordpress site on it, upload your videos to the wordpress site, all of which have videos you can already watch online to know how to do this.

2024-06-29 11:04:11 +0000 UTCI wonder if they will claim it if the title was coded (StG for example) or in a different way, since you mentioned how they just scan the titles

2024-06-29 11:03:33 +0000 UTCHonestly not that surprised MGM would do this, still sleezy though, I do think false claims should face some kind of penalty because it's pretty blatantly wrong

2024-06-29 11:02:03 +0000 UTCIt takes like 5 seconds to click on the scrub bar, and drag the mouse across the screen to get sped up images of what’s in the video. Lazy pricks can’t even get an AI to check?

2024-06-29 10:45:42 +0000 UTCBig companies use copyright claims like buckshot from a shotgun, they just hit everything and don't care if it's legit or not, because there's no penalty if they tag the wrong content. If they had to pay a fine every time they wrongly filed a claim they'd be a lot more picky.

2024-06-29 10:41:11 +0000 UTCThese companies just think about themselves and not that fact that this is a job for you or how their claims can affect you. Appreciate all that you do Curtis.

2024-06-29 10:12:16 +0000 UTCWouldn't suprise me if they just set up an AI bot instructed to search for certain terms and call out copyright on them.

2024-06-29 10:06:18 +0000 UTCThere's absolutely no repurcussions for filing a claim even though it's against the law. The studios know nobody will challenge them on it.
