2024-06-15 20:04:58 +0000 UTCI was so very happy to see how Mana worked here especially since it uses a part of the magic system that I don't see done a whole lot in modern anime. Of course, by this I mean Mana suppression. Suppressing one's "energy/Ki/Chakra/Spiritual Pressure" and the like. It's used in a very similar way to Ki suppression during the Saiyan and Freeza arc of Dragon Ball. The idea there being that Freeza's men (including Vegeta and the other Saiyans) rely too heavily on their Scouters so they underestimate their opponents because their Scouters can't see through Ki suppression. It's mainly to catch the bad guys off guard and is abandoned after the Freeza arc. Frieren does something really interesting with it, they add an unpopular view on doing it. Apparently, mages consider suppressing mana to be "a disgrace to magic" or something. In DB it was only a cool technique which is eventually done away with after DB did away with Scouters. Another interesting aspect is that the way Frieren learns Mana suppression is similar to how Goku and Gohan master Super Saiyan. They get used to using the form at all times in order to adjust to the strain. Frieren uses Mana Suppression at all times and in doing so she makes it to where it's extremely difficult to figure out if she's suppressing her mana. We also have the aspect of how Demons view hiding Mana, which is why they view it as cheating since their culture relies on it to shape their hierarchy. So fighting someone who hides their mana is something they can't prepare themselves especially with how good Frieren is at hiding this ability. I do hope no one views this as me saying Frieren is worse or better than Dragon Ball with this comparison. I was just noting something really interesting from one of my favorite series and I'm not looking to cause any arguments over involving Dragon Ball in this discussion.

2024-06-15 14:14:14 +0000 UTCthis is one of my favourite moments lol, Frieren isn't like modern heroes like Batman or Izuku, she has that old school 80s-90s era manga style of actually finishing her enemies lol, like think of how many times you've seen a modern hero tell their enemy to kill themselves and make them do it, I love it. Oh, since this is the end of Aura I should probably mention she's actually super popular with fans despite dying after only a few chapters, she came in second place with over a million votes in the manga's last popularity poll, only behind Himmel the Hero, so because of it she was one of the characters who was given their own short story as part of a prequel light novel they released earlier this year.

It's really easy to hate ugly enemies (goblins in goblin slayer for example) but when they are all hot, people treat them differently. There was a bunch of discussions during this arc where people were suggesting ways of trying to find peace with the demons which is exactly the same mistake humans in this world made heh.
