I agree with your take on using whatever words you want, its all about context. They were making a joke, not trying to be hurtful, they have no reason to apologize and they shouldn't be. They tried to apologize for the tranny joke with the Androids while 16 was fixing the truck. The comment section was filled with fans telling them to stop apologizing for making jokes.
