I think i'd give Irene more credit, it wasn't just a sliver of decency, shes a decent person all around. I mean, beyond some insults thrown at Erza did she actually do anything horrific? Being driven insane for 400 years is enough of an excuse in my book to be a bit of psycho, and she got a beatdown for her insults to boot. Now i know im an episode behind but, since her Universe One magic is undone, a spell she used to get Acnologia away, it means the big bad wolf is coming back again, and we're all wasted on our side. Lets hope for a hail mary
