Walt's ego makes him terrible at communicating effectively. The "I am the one who knocks" speech is badass, but it did nothing to reassure Skylar he's not in danger, he's right about Gus trying to manipulate Jesse but he frames it as "it's all about me". It's almost funny how incompetent it is, from an otherwise very intelligent person
