I'm not sure if the demon's backstory is supposod to make us syphathetic towards it, or just to show how complete douchebag he was even in life... But I go with the latter, good riddance, go rot in hell!

He had to choose between saving his little sister or saving those innocent villagers from the coward demon. In the end it was Nezuko who made the choice for him.
