The island, Karafuto, that they are on is still under Russian control and there are a number of small island next to it which Russia and Japan both claim ownership over to this day. Their dispute got a bit more attention than normal due to the Ukraine War and there being more of a spotlight on Russia's other territorial conflicts. I also love how everyone is 100% dedicated to their roles in the circus, would have been hilarious if the other teams had been there to witness it.
