The boys actually seem to be settling into being a solid team. I am SO curious as to how Thorfinn became so defeated!

It doesn't take much to imagine why Thorfinn is so emotionally and mentally dead. He had spent his entire childhood hyperfocused on one thing, revenge against Askeladd for killing his father, he did horrific things in Askeladds service to gain chances to duel him, he spent his entire teen years on this. And then, after everything, that one thing he wanted was taken from him, Askeladd died and it wasn't by his hand, the last we saw of him was pretty much in the same state as he is now, numb to everything while Leiff tried to convince him to come with him. His story in incredibly tragic, in reality Thorfinn never learned how to live

Beyond the moral one, was that slaves were a safety risk and tended to do whatever they could to get around work. So the actual efficiency of slaves were lower than most other workers in many cases. This became even worse if you tried to keep their amount of food low to keep them docile or to spend less on food. So giving them a future and a lifestyle is a really smart move. Lets remember that we are thinking of the owner of this farm as a decent dude, while he is infact a slave owner and that is seemingly also how Einar, his slave, sees him.
