rip to my unity projects

so i don't really plan on trying to use unity any more (in case you haven't seen the news, here is an article https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/unity-to-start-charging-fee-pegged-to-game-installs), which is a shame since i was excited about trying to port my own games to consoles but i don't really trust unity to make dev-friendly decisions any more 😔

i had some stuff that i left on the back burner (last day tea shop for example) which i don't even know if i want to make any more, so i'm just going to share some draft stuff i had for it.

i actually also have one unity game finished that i haven't released yet (it's meant to be a part of a game collection, but that collection has not released yet and with the unity news i don't know if it'll ever be released?? we'll see...)

for the unity game that is finished i'm going to check in to see how the collection is going and if it's not going to release ever i'll release the unity game within the year on my own and then just delete unity so i don't have to worry about whatever unity changes will occur in jan 2024 😢 but i hate that this is happening because i actually enjoyed using naninovel in unity & i've recommended it to other people (& naninovel isn't a free tool!) but now unity is being awful & i'm not quite sure how to proceed with all of this.

i don't want this to be a completely downer of a post so in any case i have downloaded godot to check out & so far it is nice (:

eta: also rip a tavern for tea switch port that i was working on too... all that time i put into porting it into naninovel/unity for naught 😭🍵

that's very unfortunate to hear about unity but only confirms that i don't really want to stick with it. thank you!

thank you! i'm hoping so too (:

Yeah it's absolutely disgusting. It's also likely illegal and won't actually happen, but the company won't care. They've lost billions in these last 3 years, are preparing to fire an unknown but LARGE percent of employees, and the people who run it have just been caught doing insider trading counting on the collapse of the company. Seems like they're just trying to grab all the money they can and shut down. I hope Godot goes well for you!

I'm hearing a lot of good things about Godot. I really hope you are able to build a sustainable future for your little game development with these free tools. :)

i hadn't heard about those tools, thank you so much for sharing! looking into them now

thank you! i think right now i'm just bummed about the whole unity thing but i hope when i have a bit more distance i can go back to working on last day tea shop.

i hope so too! so far Godot has been very exciting just for the reason it only takes a few seconds to boot on my computer unlike unity which takes several minutes... 😂

that's the thing! like unity always seemed to position itself as an engine for smaller devs but this decision screws us over ): i hope they roll the decision back but even if they do i don't think i want to keep investing my time in it

Have fun on your Godot journey! It works well with 2d games, still can publish on consoles and there are VN tools for it too (Rakigo and XDL). It's a shame that Yarn Spinner from Unity is only unofficially available though.

I'm so sympathetic. This is an absolutely disgusting model of monetization. No matter what the reason and whether it is ever actually implemented Unity is forever marking itself as unsafe for developers to use. I really like the art you did for Last Day Tea Shop. The tea shop itself looks so cozy and has good chill vibes, and Dela is really cute.

Unity will never recover from this; even if it's deemed illegal to force this for products already released or they try to rescind their decision to regain some goodwill, the damage has already been done. It's yet another case of a major industry putting short-term profits before long-term sustainability. I'm sad how this has affected a lot of indie devs I've truly admired, such as yourself, and I sincerely hope that this won't lead to the end of your wonderful storytelling entirely. May GODOT treat you well!

I'm sorry. I feel like small indie devs and students were the ones with real resons to choose unity over unreal or such, so this feels like such an odd choice on thier part.
