WHOA, DABI! - My Hero Academia #124

Comments

Easily missable/forgettable small detail, but back when Dabi was first introduced, he was in front of a hair salon 😆

I wish that were the case, unfortunately a lot of people believed that the story took a step back on his redemption here by bringing Toya and his backstory into the mix.

Now that we are getting some more info on the Todoroki families backstory, we can delve a little bit deeper into their origin. For example, we can now talk about the beginning of their marriage even if it's only as far as Toya's early years, before everything went to shit. It would seem from Endeavors account as well as Rei's (His wife) is that he might have not been as psycho in the beginning when compared to how he is in the previous flashbacks we have seen. First off Endeavor says in this episode that his aim was to foster a child that can use both fire and ice, he didn't get that, but Rei wanted more children making it consensual. Even then from what he said about Toya in the beginning he might have been planning to settle with Toya who seemed (from what we have seen so far) wanted to be a hero and had a positive relationship with his father in the beginning. We also learned several seasons ago that Rei (during the being separated from her family thing) received flowers from (what is being hinted at a being from) Endeavor. These specific flowers however are flowers she told him she liked when they first got married. This means that Endeavor cared enough for her to remember a specific flower she liked, once upon a time he cared for her enough to remember her favorite flower. This may hint that perhaps Endeavor actually cared for her in the beginning which combined with the info we just got from Endeavor that perhaps their living situation was a much healthier thing compared to what it will eventually become. Of course, that's all we can talk about without spoiling everyone's pants off but in a few more episodes we will be able to talk about the Endeavor family in full detail. I can't wait...

I don’t think anyone believes that this was an attempt to derail his redemption; it was simply results of who he was. It does, however, even if unintentionally, remind us of some of the scummy things he’s done.

The best way to lie is to have truth in it. Endeavor: "I continued to hope for a child who could harness fire and ice. My wife wanted siblings for Toya as well". His wife did agree with the marriage knowing full well its for quirks. Her father did it for money but should could of said no. (This is just for the base of the marriage, nothing about deserving anything) Dabi: "He continued to make my mother have kids!" I also like Dabi's "The truth I know" not "The truth". Truth I know could literally be anything and warped to be someone's truth even if 99.9% of the world says it isn't and with proof that proves its not true.

Redemption

I think its important to make a distinction here that, this isn't meant to be an antithesis to Endeavors redemption story, it doesn't counteract his growth or the empathy we're supposed to start feeling for him. He wasn't at fault for the fact that his sons body was taken by the crazy doc and put back together after the accident during training, nor that he didn't know he actually survived. Its meant to add onto his arc by completing the circle of facing his past, both for himself and the hero society as a whole, which has basically grown into a fantasy style hollywood instead of a system that protects people.

The villains's best weapon is the media and information. You twist the public appearance and approval of heroes and then they lose support of the populace. It's similar to how police and fire departments aim to keep good relations with communities; you lose their support and then the bad guys win and society suffers for it. Heroes were already receiving harsh scrutiny, but here Dabi/Toya is reviving that scrutiny and giving hero critics and skeptics the ammunition they need to bring them down. Jeanist may be alive, but that footage with Hawks killing Twice is pretty damning. I do think it was the right call to terminate Twice given how strong and unstable he was, but how Hawks did it... Yikes!

Pretty much everything Dabi is saying is the truth (or what he believes is the truth), although he does twist it ever so slightly to make it look worse (such as Hawks killing Twice). But because it's the truth no one can deny it. This season is essentially about facing the consequences of past actions, for Endeavor and society built around hero worship in general.

Agree down the line! The word "relatable" is SO true in this writing, which really is amazing, given the circumstances of their existence!

Yassss! I've been waiting for this! Oh man... so much to unpack here. First of all, Patrick Seitz, David Matranga, and ESPECIALLY Jason Liebretch were absolutely incredible this ep. Dabi gave me chills. "You will reap everything you've sown!" "Come dance with me in hell, won't you?" Ahhhh! The Todoroki storyline is one of my two favorite storylines in this entire series. Despite this being an anime, their problems feel real and relatable. Regarding Endeavor, I absolutely hated him for most of the series. In season 5, I was starting to warm up to him juuuuust a tad. And in season 6, I'm like... fuck. I don't want to like Endeavor. But like, I kiiiinda like Endeavor. And I hate that LOL. But it's a testament to the incredible storytelling of MHA
