october postcard & thanks page

hello! october postcard has been sent out a bit early since i will be away to rest this weekend. thanks page has also been updated here: https://npckc.site/#thanks

the postcard this time is simple pixel art in dedication to hiroshi "mr. dotman" ono who passed away earlier this month.

hiroshi ono was a pioneer in pixel art, starting his career at namco working on titles like xevious, galaga, mappy & dig dug. his art inspired so many pixel artists & i don't think it'd be an exaggeration to say that no pixel artist now can make anything without something of mr. dotman's influence in it.

i had the honour of talking to him many times in the past few years at various events. he would always be in this mad scientist getup with a white labcoat & goggles. he invited me to the event game legend & i wouldn't have as much of an interest in retro games as i do without him. when we met he always had something kind to say or to joke about - the last time we met, he'd poked fun because i hadn't been by his table to buy something from him yet, even though i'd said i would - but i told him i'd been by already, just he'd been away from his table, talking with everyone as he often did! he was always trying new things - i remember when i first met him, he'd asked me if i could friend him online on facebook, but i told him i mainly used twitter. then the next time i saw him, he'd told me that he'd started using twitter (he had staff helping him out) so i should check his account!

in my memories ono-san is always full of energy so to be honest i still can't really believe he's gone now & typing this up i'm tearing up again because i don't really want to believe it yet. making this postcard is something i thought i could do in his memory.

a few weeks ago while ono-san was still alive he & his team were crowdfunding a documentary about ono-san's achievements. the crowdfunding was stopped after the news of his death, but after discussing with his relatives, it was decided to restart the crowdfunding but limited to until november 1st, because they wanted the documentary to be made so that people could learn more about ono-san. if you'd like to check out the crowdfunding campaign, you can do so here: https://motion-gallery.net/projects/mr-dotman_movie

I hadn't heard about that death, my new job taking all my time. That is a great loss. A...very great loss. Pixel art was something I practiced avidly for a good decade, and still touch on when I have the time. I agree, It is extremely difficult to overestimate the reach his art has had, the people his style has touched. I'll be sure to donate. The world has lost a great artist, and at least from what I've seen, a great person.
