A key metabolite in cellular metabolism called oxyloacetate has demonstrated some promising benefits for alleviating emotional symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome. Both experimentally and clinically
Some interesting research that we’ll cover bellow indicates that it can significantly improve various responses to emotional challenges faced by women during this phase of their menstrual cycle.
Oxaloacetate plays a crucial role in gluconeogenesis, which many of you may be familiar with. Its the process by which glucose is synthesized from non-carbohydrate sources like fatty acids. During PMS, women often experience increased glucose demands in the brain, particularly in the cerebellum, which is involved in emotional regulation. Supplementing with oxaloacetate helps maintain adequate glucose levels, potentially preventing the emotional disturbances linked to glucose shortages in the cerebellum.
While oxyloacetate appaears to regulate energy metabolism system wide, it appears to have the most affinity for neuronal tissue
Oxaloacetate can also influences the balance between neurotransmitters like GABA and glutamate, and this appears to be one of the primary mechanisms through which we believe OA exerts many of its therapeutic roles in the brain.
An imbalance in these neurotransmitters is associated with various emotional disorders. Oxaloacetate supplementation has been shown to reduce glutamate levels (the neurotransmitter most responsible for promoting excitability) and increases GABA levels (which has more calming effects) without inducing drowsiness.
This alteration in the GABA/glutamate ratio appears to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and aggression commonly experienced during PMS.
Clinical research
A clinical trial involved 48 women experiencing PMS symptoms demonstrated oxaloacetate significantly reduced their emotional symptoms. Participants reported improvements in:
Depression: 54.1% reduction
Perceived stress: 35.8% reduction
Generalized anxiety: 51.43% reduction
Aggression: 17.8% reduction
Suicidal ideation: 47.9% reduction
While relatively high doses were used in these studies (up to 1000mg daily) many of the initial anecdotal reports that spurred the initial trial had women taking OA at around 100-300mg per day in the morning. Many of my clients have used similar doses with great results.
