This 1998 article sees Treasure president, programmer, and puzzle aficionado Masato Maegawa outlining his history with puzzles (video or otherwise) and expounding upon the broad categories by which puzzle videogames should be categorized and evaluated. One wouldn’t necessarily expect a member of an over-the-top action game developer like Treasure to be so enamored with the efficient simplicity of polyominos or sokoban, but it goes a long way in explaining the brutal rigidity of “puzzle’em’ups” like Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun.
