Hello everyone,
This month, my main focus needs to be this piece, The Beacon, as it is my painting for the Beinart Gallery show, and it will need to ship to Australia in August in time for the September show. So it;s all steam ahead trying to get this baby done in time.

You can see my sketch taped to the wall in the background, and my colour palette next to it.

My first step was to isolate the fire with some drawing gum so that it can stay white until the last minute and be my brightest value.

I made a mistake at this point ; I thought I had scanned the piece to retain the sketch, but I did some amendments to the foliage right after my last scan, which means I painted over those changes without having a clear image of them saved for later reference.
I was very frustrated when I realised that!
It'll be fine, it's foliage, in the dark, so I can get away with loosing some detail and it not all making perfect sense, but still...

The key here is going to be working in light washes and slowly building up my values until I get the depth I want.
Maintaining control over my values and keeping to my colour palette is going to be my main challenge with this piece.

Hair is what I struggle most with, after faces, so I delved into that fast to try and beat my self-confidence to the punch.

And here is where I am at at this point.
Slowly building my values, and trying to get the balance of cool tones and warm tones right.
I will have more pictures to come soon!
In the meantime, I hope you are all well!
All my love,
M
