Hi lovely people,
How are you all?
Over here, things are good. I'm my usual amount of exhausted, but at least I managed to spend a good portion of last week sketching, which felt incredible.
I shared the sketches in my Patreon Lenses (which you can access like an Insta Story on the Patreon app), and I'm so glad you guys enjoyed them! Thank you for all your kind comments on them :).
I am now going to start working on bigger paintings, and, as always, I have a million concepts I want to paint. I have tried to organise myself and I made a visual list of all the pieces I want to explore. I thought I would share this with you, in case you are interested in knowing what I have coming!
These are not in order of priority, as I will probably work on several at the same time, to keep myself from getting too bogged down and getting tunnel vision.
A couple are redraws of previous paintings I either did a little while ago and want to update, or that I wasn't fully satisfied with and would like to take further.
Most don't have final titles, so the title given here is just rough and temporary.
✦ UNRAVELLING

This one, most of you will be familiar with, as it's one of my most recent paintings.
It might seems like I finalised this concept with the painting on the right, but that was only another study for me.
I love this idea, and I want to make a big piece out of it. My main conundrum is whether to use a full-body character or not. The first drawing, the Inktober drawing (left above) is full-body, so I decided to zoom in and try a simple portrait (right above).
Both feel to extreme to me, and I think I have finally settled on a composition for the final piece, which I will share with you once I have sketched it out.
I think I am going to go for a head to waist pose, and I want the strands to interact with the environment around them, either by blowing in the wind, or by getting caught in branches and brambles.
We'll see...:)
✦ DUST

This concept is one I am very excited to work on, but also a bit scared, because I like it so much.
It obviously originated as an Inktober drawing (left), and you guys might remember helping me choose the final sketch. :)
This one if the closest I am to being able to start painting, as I have the final composition figured out, I just need to finalise the details and draw it big.
✦ HARP PLAYER

This concept dates back to the beginning of 2018! I have been thinking of turning it into a painting for a while, so I re-explored the sketch recently (right), going for a very different vibe and composition.
I want to do a few more exploratory sketches, and once I have a few I'm happy with, I'll probably have a poll to ask what direction you guys prefer.
✦ TATTOOED

This piece is one I have pretty much all figured out in my head, save for a few details. which is why the sketch is quite simple and bare, as I haven't felt the need to explore the idea further.
I want the group of women to have a big tattoo of an animal or a creature spanning all of them, with perhaps another creature in the darkness being them. I want this piece to be empowering and powerful, rather than dark and menacing.
✦ CARNIVOROUS

This concept is an idea I figured out quite quickly, and I am pretty much settled on the final composition. The image on the right will probably be the basis for the final sketch.
the idea for this one, is that tattoos of vines all over the character's body will be coming to life, and becoming carnivorous plants. Some of the vines will probably hold animals, such as birds and butterflies.
I am pondering whether to have this piece go in tandem with the next one in this list.
✦ BLUE BIRDS

This idea has been on my easel for a while now, and some of may remember me sharing the final sketch with you a while back.
I got to the final sketch point, but never actually got round to painting it, partly because other projects got in the way, and partly because I am still not sure about it. Something doesn't click yet. I want to continue exploring it.
This is the concept I am thinking of creating alongside the Carnivorous one above, as the idea is that tattoos of birds are emerging from the body of the character, and coming to life, and either attacking or protecting the character, I haven't decided.
I like both this idea and Carnivorous to potentially go together and have some of the birds in this piece, caught in the vines of the one above.
✦ SPIKES

This concept is still in the early stages of development, as I haven't found a composition that clicked with me yet, but I'll keep exploring and updating you.
I am considering making a series out of those, rather than one, big, single piece, as the idea behind this concept, is to express emotions through geometric "explosions" and shapes.
✦ NEGATIVE SPACE

This concept is another one in the early stages of planning, for which I need to explore the composition further.
I would like some detail in the background, to really drive home the fact that the character is being erased when its hands meet. Maybe also have something coming through the hole? I don't know yet...
✦ SHADOWS

This idea might look like a mess at the moment, but I've actually planned it out quite a bit at this point.
This is one of those ideas that will look a lot better as a painting (hopefully), than a sketch, which is why I haven't made a full-blown sketch out of it.
The concept goes like this : the character is slowly turning into shadows and becoming translucent, with only its left arm still solid and tangible.
The character will be walking into a forest of sorts.
✦ WITHIN GRASP

This one is another one that, as above, will probably be better translated as a painting than a sketch.
Similarly to the previous idea, the character in this one is also turning translucent, and hands are reaching out to grasp it, but only going through.
I am pondering whether to make the hands create ripples in the character, or whether to leave the character undisturbed, and perhaps unaware, of the world trying to reach it.
✦ MOONDUST

You might be surprised to see this one here, but I still have unfinished business with this piece! I love the concept, and I still don't feel like I've done it justice.
It isn't high on my priority list, as I feel I have explored it quite a bit already, and I want to move on to other things for a bit, but I still have it in the corner of my mind, and I want to revisit it at some point.
✦IN MEMORIAM

This one is old! Way before I had Patreon....It was one of my most popular, and one of my favourite pieces at the time, but even the, I could see how much was wrong in it, and so it has always been on my mind to explore it again.
I love the translucent child idea, and I think I could make it better, more dynamic and more anatomically accurate, nowadays. I will probably get rid of the horn, but keep the creatures, and have the female character either naked, or clothed differently, and in a more natural position than this, We'll see...
✦ HOLLOW

Aaah, my old nemesis. Some of you may remember this piece from my Patreon beginnings, and how conflicted I was about it.
It was such a tough one to paint, and I was so disgruntled towards the end, that I didn't even offer it as a normal print on my shop.
However, I was unhappy because I loved the idea so much, and I felt I had failed it. But that doesn't mean I gave up on it!
Since I painted it, I discovered Miles Johnston, and he created similar concepts to this one, so I want to make sure that with my new painting, I stray away from the kind of things he has done with his idea. I would like to add a background of some kind, and re-visit the position of the two characters and how they interact.
And that's it! For now...
To be honest, I could probably add a bunch of ideas to this, especially since my week of sketching last week resulted in a bunch of ideas I want to explore further, but I need to restrict myself and focus.
I suspect I will be making a few sketches of each of these concepts, and if I have any problems, I might enlist your opinion via various polls and posts!
But whatever happens, I will keep you all in the loop and will update you as I go along.
I hope you enjoyed this peak into my work in progress pieces!
Don't hesitate to let me know what you think in the comments, I always love hearing from you!
I hope you are all well,
Take care everyone,
Love, M
