Quick thoughts on the latest Yoshinobu Yamamoto rumors

This is Day 30 of Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s 45-day posting window. All indications are his meetings are over – Yamamoto met with the Yankees in Los Angeles last Monday and again in New York (at Yankee Stadium?) this past Sunday – and the bidding process began in earnest this week. With any luck, he’ll sign before Christmas and we can all move on with our lives.
Here are the latest Yamamoto rumors via Jack Curry, Jack Harris, Bob Klapisch, Jon Morosi, Jeff Passan, and Mike Puma.
- Yamamoto began taking formal contract offers Monday. His representatives asked clubs for preliminary offers early in the process so they could see who was serious, and weed out teams that were interested but weren’t going to make competitive offers.
- It’s been said Yamamoto wants to pitch on the “biggest stage,” and who knows what that means. The Yankees are the sport’s most iconic franchise, but the biggest stage to him could be the one that features Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Shohei Ohtani.
- The Dodgers are considering a bid in the $250M to $300M range. That feels like the get in price at this point, but who knows what the contract structure will be with the Dodgers and their big deferrals and all that.
- Yamamoto has unique training and preparation methods (read Passan’s article) and the Yankees apparently told him they won’t interfere or change anything.
- There is a “growing sense” Yamamoto will not sign until after Christmas, and maybe not until after New Years. Groan.
A $300M contract, which seems likely at this point, would come with a $46M+ posting fee. Ken Rosenthal (subs. req’d) says the posting fee will be paid in installments. The first 50% is due within 14 days, the next 25% is due within 12 months, and the final 25% is due within 18 months. That eases the burden a bit, though I doubt that changes Yamamoto’s market in any way.
Yamamoto’s feelings are the great unknown and there’s so much conflicting information out there. One day you hear he prefers one thing, the next day it’s something else. It’s exhausting. We simply don’t know whether Yamamoto considers New York and the Yankees the biggest stage, if he’s okay playing second fiddle to Ohtani with the Dodgers, or countless other things.
The Yankees went 82-80 in 2023, so they have to do more selling than usual here. They have to sell Yamamoto on this past season being a blip, which it was compared to 2017-22 but may not be when you look at their recent decision-making, and on joining a team where he will not be the ace. At least not initially. Gerrit Cole is and will continue to be the No. 1, and get that spotlight.
They could also (probably did?) try to sell Yamamoto on the idea of helping the Yankees return to prominence. That was part of the pitch to CC Sabathia back in the day. Yeah, we’re the Yankees, but we need you to get us back to dominating the sport. Being the guy who puts the Yankees back on top could appeal to Yamamoto. It did Sabathia. It did many others. Fingers crossed it works here.
I really, really, really hope that nugget about Yamamoto possibly not signing until after Christmas (or worse, New Years) is wrong. I get it, this is a major life decision, but COME ON man. Sign Thursday, press conference Friday, on a plane back to Japan Saturday. Sound good? These things have a way of coming together quickly. I sincerely hope they do here, one way or another.

I saw that and it's on my list to write about (but not a top priority). They must've checked in before the Soto trade or something like that. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.

2023-12-20 19:03:34 +0000 UTCYeah, you’d expect the unproven Japanese pitcher to make 30% or so less than the proven ace. I think the difference is that now there’s more crazy rich owners. Both crazy rich and crazy.

2023-12-20 18:25:10 +0000 UTCI think “biggest stage” means World Series. So I could imagine Philadelphia looking tempting, but come on, the Yankees are in the playoffs, or very close to it, every single year! Teams like Mets and Red Sox have boom and bust cycles.

2023-12-20 18:19:22 +0000 UTCTanaka signed that contract in 2014. You have to account for prices/inflation plus the fact that the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees are all involved and he's also viewed as the best pitcher on the market.

2023-12-20 16:35:37 +0000 UTCHow much better is Yamamoto than Tanaka when he came over? Tanaka got 7/$155 the same month Kershaw extended for 7/$215M. And Kershaw was coming off a Pedro-like run of dominance. Is YY really that good?

2023-12-20 15:05:04 +0000 UTCThe “conflicting information” out there is almost assuredly being driven by the agent. He’s done a masterful job of building uncertainty to drive the expected contract value from $200MM, to $250MM, to $300MM, to potentially more than Cole’s contract. It wouldn’t surprise me if Cohen’s opening bid is $325.

2023-12-20 14:40:12 +0000 UTCSame feelings here, but trying not to blame him (it’s a big moment!) and instead consider that media is standing in front of a very cold stove right now.

2023-12-20 14:22:32 +0000 UTCHe could, but he'd be leaving A LOT of money on the table.

2023-12-20 13:56:04 +0000 UTCHe made around 5 million pitching in Japan last year. Not likely.

2023-12-20 13:53:59 +0000 UTCSince, according to Bob Klapisch, this signing may not take place until around New Years' & the Yanks are allegedly all in for 2024,why not further lure in Yamamoto by going out & signing the best closer available in Hader? Yeah,I know he wants the highest RP contract in history, but if Hal's truly committed to a World Series this year, signing Hader before Yamamoto commits would certainly show Yamamoto & Joel Wolfe how committed the Yankees are!

2023-12-20 12:19:59 +0000 UTCCan he just decide not to sign and go back to Japan?

2023-12-20 12:06:45 +0000 UTCMike, any truth to the Jorge Soler rumors? Seems a little far fetched to me considering the presence of Stanton.

2023-12-20 12:05:35 +0000 UTCYeah I’m growing impatient as well with this process. Mostly because the Yankees still need a lot of other things and slowly but surely guys are coming off the board. If they miss out on Yamamoto the options are dwindling and will continue to do so. 2024 is obviously very important year for the Yankees and they have to capitalize perhaps the only year of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.

2023-12-20 12:03:16 +0000 UTCThanks Mike. It’s been funny listening to all the Mets fans on WFAN opining about how “Uncle Stevie” or “King Cohen’s” money is going to carry the day with Yamamoto. I think the Mets will have to pay quite a $ premium to pry Yamamoto away from NYY, who despite all their faults are still the more stable NY baseball franchise, and the sports most iconic brand. Eventually Cohen’s money is going to have an impact on the NYY-NYM rivalry, perhaps as soon as next year with Juan Soto, but not yet.
