Suggestion/idea - what if you update the final roster grid each time one of those players comes off the table? Don’t need a whole post about it just adjust the plan as time goes on. Would be interesting.

2023-11-14 22:35:12 +0000 UTCI'd pay the monthly subscription just to be able to read this, as always it's my favourite post of the year (until I'll read the one about the World Series). I can only imagine what kind of research goes behind it, congrats to you Mike. About the roster: YAMASOTO. That's all we need. Give me those two and the rest will sort itself out. By the way, I've kinda always liked Contreras, so that'd be cool. PS. I'm going to try and execute this plan on MLB The Show and see what happens.

2023-11-14 10:56:26 +0000 UTCGreat read but not loving it. I want nothing to do with Contreras. Defense first at catcher, all day every day. Plus there's no way Hal eats the Stanton money after the Hicks resurgence, so DH is full. Also, Rodon's ceiling is way too high to swap him headache for headache. I do Mike's Gleyber for Busch deal and spend Gleyber's money on Candelario. Then sign Bellinger, Kiermaier. and Yamamoto, with Montgomery and Nola, in that order, as fallbacks. We keep King and all our prospects, we add 4 lefty bats, and with Trevino behind the plate and Volpe, Peraza, Kiermaier and Bellinger in the field, we go from one of the worst defenses to one of the best.

2023-11-14 02:57:30 +0000 UTCIncredible work as always Mike. The Contreras-Rodon swap is genius. Have a weird feeling Longoria will be this year Chavez/Andruw/ Holliday type

2023-11-14 02:56:47 +0000 UTCThanks for your reply. I also want to thank you for the time and effort you put into this. I can't imagine the work it takes. You said in one of your answers the other day that you wouldn't do a good job as GM. I for one wish you would be given the chance to try (and I'm being serious.)

2023-11-14 01:42:16 +0000 UTCThe only answer I can give is Soto and Contreras in, Rodon out. Contreras is a pretty fiery dude and Soto posts up every single day. He never misses a game. Rodon came off as a bit whiny this year.

2023-11-13 21:39:12 +0000 UTCNot really. Not once I decided to go with Soto. I really don't know what to think about Bellinger. He gives me Ellsbury vibes, but he's so young and he's we've him play at an MVP level before.
Michael Axisa
2023-11-13 21:37:48 +0000 UTCI didn't give him much thought for the Offseason Plan. He makes me nervous, and once I was determined to make Soto work, there wasn't any room for him financially.

2023-11-13 21:00:15 +0000 UTCI believe the Yankees run it back with their major addition of Yamamoto but what genuinely terrifies me is the following scenario: Dodgers sign Ohtani, Mets sign Yamamoto, Padres keep Soto (or my sleeper pick Mariners trade for him). That leaves Yankees with largely the same rotation with a Montas reunion. Now you have the wonderful task of spreading your innings across: (1) Cole: elite (2) Rodon: bad but can comeback (3) Schimdt: eclipsed his previous highest innings thrown mark (4) King: random SP resurgence (5) Cortes: lots of injuries (6) Montas: ??? All besides Cole have a great history of injuries and inconsistency, so you're hoping for comebacks and outlier durability. Also, you have the hope for the same on offense because not much is changing there either. Fun!!

2023-11-13 20:43:09 +0000 UTCThoughts on Bellinger? Solid reasons to think his last season was legit with his re-worked mechanics (to use more of his lower body) and further removed from his shoulder issues when he was with the Dodgers. He did overperform given his weaker avg. exit velo but you take it given a chance of higher upside with the short porch. He is young, athletic, and a lefty which meets the desired framework. You'll get a full-time CF for a the next few years, thus allowing a Domínguez-Bellinger-Judge outfield. He can flex to 1B as Rizzo ages. I think Kiermaier receives more than $10M (but for two years), and at that point, you'd be better off paying for Bellinger and knowing you have a long-term CF. I think teams would be wise to lock him up early as there will be a bidding war post-Ohtani signs and Soto is traded as you're then left with Lee and Gurriel Jr as your best OF options. 5 years, $100M ($20M) with an opt-out after 3 years (his age 31 season) hopefully gets it done. Makes even sense if you know you are not going to sign Soto next offseason.

2023-11-13 20:33:11 +0000 UTCAny consideration of bellinger? I'm not a fan personally, and logic suggests the Yankees would be scared of the batted ball data, but just about every reporter has said that they will be in on Bellinger. I don't know what to make of that but he worries me for sure.

2023-11-13 16:38:31 +0000 UTCGreat work. I can only imagine the amount of time it takes to put these together yearly. Always a fun look. I mentioned this prior, but I do believe the Yankees will move on from Stanton before 2026, if need be (meaning he confirms he's toast). I fully understand why they are going to use 2024 to see if they can get Stanton back on track. This was his first down year of his career. Even as recent as 2022, he had a 113 OPS+ and 31 HRs in barely over a 100 games. I wanted them to trade him then because he still had value and they would have found takers if they paid down his deal significantly. I wanted him gone before he was at zero value. He's now at zero value. That thinking is similar to yours on Rodon. If Stanton has a second straight disastrous season at the plate, then "financial geek" Hal will understand a sunk cost. It's one thing to hold onto Donaldson for a single year. I don't see him holding on to Stanton for multiple years of zero value, actually negative value. He'll be happy to get $750K back! Not happening in 2024 though. Is that team better defensively? I'm torn. KK upgrades CF, although we did have Bader. Soto, Busch and Willson Contreras all seem like downgrades defensively. Maybe the other additions and moves balances that out on the defensive side?

2023-11-13 16:00:40 +0000 UTCDefinitely, I'm not advocating they stand pat, I'm just saying I suspect they won't want to go toe to toe bc of the optics and pressure this off season.

2023-11-13 15:32:23 +0000 UTCIsn’t refusing to get into a bidding war with them losing by default, though? You’d just be letting them have the player at a presumably lower contract number.

2023-11-13 15:06:33 +0000 UTCOne of your stated goals was to change the culture. How has that been changed?

2023-11-13 15:06:06 +0000 UTCI mean, yeah, your off season is the perfect plan. I'm really glad you called out not liking what you saw under the hood for Lee. Obv based on the hit tool, Lee sounded great, but I really know nothing about his batting profile. That said, no matter what Preller says to posture, they're absolutely trading Soto before the season. It's really the only thing they can do to cut the roll. But if they're so motivated on shedding salary, I think the deal for Soto will go for who takes along another contract. So here's my offseason, trade king and Pereira for Soto and Darvish with the Padres taking 40mm of the remaining 84mm left. I'm not sure they'll get a similar dead with a major league SP to replace yu (or snell) anywhere else. I'd absolutely LOVE to get Yamamoto, but the yanks can't afford to get into a bidding war VS the Mets and lose. The city will explode, and I really think by design the yanks and the Mets will not have conflicting targets. Buster made a good point tho... When the yanks want a pitcher they get them. We Gve cc 161mm and the next highest was LAA at 100mm. Cole too. If I remember correctly, we offered cliff Lee the highest contract too. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty confident this off season we aren't gonna go toe to toe with the Mets.

2023-11-13 14:23:40 +0000 UTCMike, dude! Outstanding job on the off-season plan this year!! The amount of research and thought you must have put into this is incredible! I’m only halfway done reading it at the moment (have to head out to an appt) and there’s already so much to like about it. I only hope the real life Yankees do half of what you suggest (the top/best half though). Really well done, and can’t wait to get home to finish reading the rest of it! Thanks for all the great Yankees content that you provide!!
