I had to stop mid read and comment.....what the heck are the higher ups at YES watching, hearing, or seeing that makes them think bringing Beltran back is acceptable??? Feels like we've gone from a top tier broadcast last year to a bottom 3rd. Maybin has gotten better throughout the season and I think he does well when pair with Ruocco. But man they missed the mark badly with Beltran. I love the Kay-Cone-O'Neill A-team broadcast and feel it's one of the best. However the others have left a lot to be desired and really make me miss Singleton, Buck, etc. YES needs to go back to the idea well next year and bring in some better talent.

There's a thoughtful article that appeared on Pinstripealley several days ago, that considered Benintendi's suitability for YSIII.

Another loss. This is easily the weirdest season I've experienced as a fan, and I go back to the 70s. A team that's unbeatable for over 1/3 the season, and now is embarrassingly bad for nearly the next 1/3. We can get annoyed at bad starts, or a sputtering pen, but it really is all tied into the lack of offense. It puts pressure on every other area.

They hit big on Trevino though!

Great question from Steven on Benintendi slashing being a terrible fit for YS. What scares me is the thought that they just didn't consider it. Which seems unlikely except they also keep trading for AL West players on bad teams with nobody in the stands who flop here. They keep doing the things that don't work, as if they're convinced they were right the entire time. Gambler's fallacy is a really shitty way to run a front office.

Hopefully this doesn't end up as a double comment. I made a couple edits and then my comment disappeared. It's as if Patreon will only allow you one or two edits! Another enjoyable writeup, Mike, which is not easy to do with the Yankees enduring one of their most unenjoyable stretches in recent memory. They've had other bad stretches before, but the fact it's happened in a season that started with such great promise is disturbing. A baseball Jekyll & Hyde scenario. Regarding Kiner-Falefa, I don't believe the Yankees thought they had another DJ LeMahieu type in IKF. They knew the numbers on both players and they are quite different. They were touting DJLM's line drive rate, barrel rate, exit velocity, and his dip in BABiP when they first signed him. His batted-ball profile suggested good things. No way their analytics team saw that with IKF. I think they figured a Donaldson/IKF infield would be significantly better defensively than Urshela/Gleyber, and they're correct. I believe they like IKF, but they don't love IKF. He's simply their guy for this year. There's no way I see IKF blocking Peraza or Volpe in 2023 and beyond. It's clear he's the stopgap in 2022 and he's the fallback if for some reason the other two flopped. That's not happening. He can transition into a super-sub role when either Peraza or Volpe grab the position next season. Last, I would not want IKF replacing Donaldson at 3rd. Even a depleted Donaldson is better offensively and defensively than IKF, plus he's always the threat to strike a mighty blow as he did the other night. IKF? Ha! Please. Maybe I'm just bitter because I had a side bet I made with a friend midseason hat IKF wouldn't hit a HR this year.

The Yanks could use prime Dellin Betances now.

I didn't do a good job of phrasing that first question. It wasn't necessarily comparing DJ vs Donaldson at 3b but comparing an infield of DJ/Gleyber at 3B/2B vs. Donaldson/DJ at 3b/2b. I would argue the second combination is better defensively and at this point I'm not sure it is that much worse offensively

IKF is their position player Boone

I think Volpe will be starting SS next season. Assuming there are service time manipulation team benefits for keeping him in AAA for a month or 6 weeks (as in the past), he’ll be up the week after they protect a full season. Gives them that additional 40 man spot all off-season.

Or maybe a better choice would be Rupert Jones, who hit a wall off grand slam in extra innings on August 12, 1980 against the White Sox. Not an ultimate grand slam, but I can tell you the Stadium absolute EXPLODED when he hit it… because I was there as a kid.

Can you please do Random Yankee: Mike Stanley as a slump buster? Not really “random” he was part of a semi- great three headed catching monster along with Matt Nokes and Jim Leyritz for a hot minute. I have nothing to say about the current team, other than thank you Mike for the write ups as always and hope you’re having a great summer.
