Medium vs Jekyll
Added 2020-01-22 01:14:54 +0000 UTCAs a follow up to my previous post here, I wanted to talk a little bit about my thoughts on using Medium over the blog on the Egee.io website.
I wrote a short "Pros & Cons" list that I won't bother sharing because I can better explain my bullet points in just a few paragraphs.
It really comes down to branding, customizability, or personalization. I'm not sure what to call it but I think you know what I'm talking about.
On the Egee.io blog, I can make it look and feel how I want it. On Medium, you get a regular Medium article with my avatar at the top.
Is this important? You bet. But how important? And is it worth the effort of maintaining my own personal blog instead of just using the services provided by Medium? That's the big question.
The thing that people don't often talk about when they switch away from Medium is all of the features and tools provided by it. Medium is a platform and, as such, it provides a ton of tools to help creators write create articles. Can I do the same with Jekyll? Sure. But at what cost?
Effort and Time don't come for free. The tools provided by Medium to assist in writing articles, as well as for analytics to help creators fine-tune their articles are fantastic.
The breaking point when comparing the Egee.io blog to Medium really comes to down SEO & discoverability. Medium is simply a better platform for people looking to discover new content.
Not only does Medium offer great SEO, but it's also an authority; Google is going to rank an article found on Medium higher than the same article on Egee.io.
I'm not going to decide which platform to use (Jekyll vs Medium) in this blog post but I think you can see which direction I'm leaning.
