He's not actually as reformed as Celestia's declaration of reformation would have you believe, and his cooperation with the princesses isn't necessarily being done out of the goodness of his heart, but rather out of a desire to please the one he loves: Fluttershy. Their companionship is basically the only thing keeping him in check.
