I got this laser for free. Is it any good?

This is a great video but you seriously need to get proper PPE goggles for that thing. The ones it came with, I guarantee you, do somewhere between “woefully insufficient” and “nothing at all”, and even that diode is powerful enough to cause damage just from looking at the dot.

Aside from making squares, circles, square circles and pictures, what can you actually do with it?

Buy properly rated laser goggles for the wavelength used. The glasses those things come with are at best not that effective, and at worse, actually do nothing for the wavelength on the laser they came with. An easy way to test how effective they are is just to try lasering paper with a sacrifical part of the glasses in the way. Those things can instantly cause eye damage and/or blindness from just reflections. It's worth dropping a couple hundred in the property PPE.

I bet you could take the engraver off the mdf base, and then plop it down on any large surface to engrave it. Like the Dakota hood someone mentioned above. Or the floor. Could probably even figure out a way to clamp it to a wall or maybe the side of the bus.

I mean, so long as the contract doesn't have an NDA clause, I'm sure you could, and I doubt they would care. I know a few Patreons that share their contracts for transparency reasons. (this isint asking you to so much as an "it would be fine if you did")

Also I actually have a glow forge it’s fun but the glue gave out on one hinge and now it won’t print right and I have to pay like 300 round trip to ship it to glowforge to fix it. Eventually

Actually, I was talking about the go kart build video when I said that. I got that deadline pushed back to early October since I was sick for nearly a full week. I just happened to release this laser thing on the last day of the month
