A Dream (not Deerbourne)

"Eva?" I ask, blinking back dreams and sitting up in my bed, bewildered with half sleep.
But you aren't there. Only your room - dark except for the phosphorescent green glow of your nightlight. Silent and still.
I arch toward my desk, toward the computer, but stop when a shadow shifts into view, stepping from the doorway I've walked through countless times. The shadow gets close enough that the green glow turns blueish from the computer screen.
It's you, your face as lovely as ever but blank. Hollow eyed.
"Say something," you say. Simple. A command that sounds more like a plea.
I open my mouth, but no words come.
"Say something," you repeat, voice detached but eyes focused directly on the camera. Directly at me.
"Say something."
"Say something."
"Say. Something."
I don't know how long this goes on. How long you make the same two words feel like a death sentence. How long you repeat, over and over.
But then you stop.
And the screen goes blank.
And I am left in my room, in the dark.
Left behind.
