CHAPTER 1. Ghostflusters

(24 pgs)

[Commentary, sketches and bonus story later this week. Thank you for your support!]

Comments

I appreciate the discussion of abuse and bad coping mechanisms in the comic. (Among many other important things Honestuck touches on) I started reading when I was about 13/14, and all the weird relationship bullshit made me feel not so alone. Now at 22, I can point to this piece of media as a truly important thing for me growing up.

DezzyHella

I don't suspect anything, which is why I think there should be transparency.

Ben Kaw

the blue and red panel with dirk was super pretty tbh

lankque

I want old man jake to rustle my feathers

Cyberbun

Homestuck was never made "all by one guy"; the music team showed up pretty early, and the art team not long after.

Madame Hardy

Wow. I disagree. What Pumpkin, a business, does not owe me its balance sheets. What am I buying for my $N a month? I'm buying better-paid artists/musicians and faster updates. Disney is a publicly traded company, and is legally required to issue quarterly reports. And of course they're good at reports: they're a multibillion-dollar company. It's like comparing your local diner to McDonalds.

Madame Hardy

1. Homestuck INFAMOUSLY has never been good with money. The Kickstarter was one the biggest scams of all time, for an example, and while not as well known as the Kickstarter scandal, there is the fact that on the Bandcamp it was a 70:30 split for payments -- 70% went to Hussie for music he didn't make. 2. People have increasingly been suspicious of why these updates take so long; and when they finally do its a small amount of kinda low quality pages. I read through the pages in less than 10 minutes, yet now will have to wait upwards to a month for the next less than 10 minute sized update. Where is all the thousands of dollars going toward, and how is it being used? Is the art team being paid well for page, and same for the writing team? And how much money is being made in the patreon, anyway? Homestuck is a multi million dollar IP, is it really so hard to publish reports about how much it as a franchise makes? Fucking Disney is better at financial reports than Homestuck. So I ask whoever runs the Patreon -- Can a full transparency report be made with how much the team makes and how much the Patreon as a whole makes? Homestuck, after all, originally was a completely free thing, something that was made consistently at a faster pace all by one guy for free, and now that there is an actual team and actual money to be made, no transparency about what is really is being used for is being made.

ThatOneEnder

Why did the Homestuck creator's opt out of Grapheon, a website that shows a very accurate estimate of earnings for patreons? Furthermore, I'd like to use this comment section to formally request a transparency report on the Homestuck Patreon, for the following reasons:

bsixone

Weird for non-canon stuff to be beyond canon. Lets see where this goes. Nice work patching up Jake's character and bringing back characters that were oddly absent in the epilogue. Looking forward to more

Silent Eric

Really excited to see the adult designs for more characters, this was cool. Also ty Dirk for being so meta-temporally extra.

Snepitome

Not gonna lie, I kinda hoped we get to see a the start of a 800 page epic about Vodka Mutinie's Adventures.

Your Resident Homestuck Guy, Gumba Masta

Jake is a wonderful milf

Utterly without redeeming social importance

Also Dirk confirmed as a lover of dad bods lol

Chaggen Nuggets

Yoooooo dude seeing Jake as an old man is all kinds of hype. It's like we finally really get to see Grandpa Harley in action. He's not just a stuffed doll anymore guys! In fact, he's the MAIN CHARACTER

Chaggen Nuggets

Ah thank you! For some reason checking the website's FAQ slipped my mind.

Dário Paquinha

I enjoyed this. Thank you for the update.

Tai

I'm really happy with this update. The art was fantastic, and I've already had good conversations with friends about it. I also want to say to maybe offset the nonsense a tiny bit that I'm really happy with whatever we get in an update—I'm happy to support y'all anyway so you can better afford to make it. Keep up the great work. <3

Cassie Jones

Loved this update! This is all getting me an emotional whiplash, but in like, a good way??? Can't wait to see where this is heading!

Ena-Malika Børve

I think I have to disagree with you there! Not only is this a popular franchise which increases its value, but 24 pages in two weeks sounds absolutely undoable!! Let's have a little faith in the team, and assume they are doing their best to push out what they can for their fans! : ) We all crave that sweet HS, but this is only the beginning phase, hopefully!

Ena-Malika Børve

"Worth noting that the money isn't solely going to the people working on HS^2, at least not last I checked? I wish I knew how to find the source, but it's something I feel should be clearer to the patrons if true. Don't just take my word for it please." that's in the FAQ! "Are people being paid to do this? — Yes, but this effort is only possible through crowdfunding via Patreon. The Patreon supports What Pumpkin and all authors and artists on this project. Additional funding beyond what's required to create the project will support new projects from What Pumpkin, and a portion of the proceeds will be directly shared with the creative contributors to this comic. Patrons above a certain level will receive monthly BONUS UPDATES beginning in November." thank you for your comment btw i very agree with it, especially the last paragraph! its always paying not for the content but to support the creators

Quasar Nebula

my fingers are crossed for Carapacian Content

spades gameing

Just wanted to say thank you for all of this. I know a lot of stuff has happened in the last month, both good and not-so-good. So thank you. We're all rooting for you and this project.

Full Blown Marxism

I hope leprechauns are in the bonus update! :)

Daniel Phillips

Its an alright start, Might be a bit biased because Its 1 AM right now and I was not in the mood to spend an hour reading, but I was hoping to see the new world Dirk had found, On the other hand I did want to see more of Earth C and I got that wish, just a bit sooner than expected.... (Pssst, give us Harry AnderVris content in the patreon exclusive updates)

Maggcat

Initially felt a bit disheartened about the amount of pages, as Hussie's heyday of feverishly unhealthy page/day ratio got me used to a speed that just isn't really justifiable nowadays, even with a bigger team, in my opinion. There's Hiveswap being developed, and Pesterquest being developed and released as well, and some of the people involved also cross over, as not only is this not their only occupation, but it's not their only source of income as well. Worth noting that the money isn't solely going to the people working on HS^2, at least not last I checked? I wish I knew how to find the source, but it's something I feel should be clearer to the patrons if true. Don't just take my word for it please. It's worth noting that while I initially felt like it wasn't a lot of content, which like I said, comparatively, it isn't, I found myself discussing the contents of the update and what it says about the characters covered for almost double the length of time it too me to read it! Sure, that's always been present to some extent, but I think it's especially prevalent when the story focuses on Jake Dagnabbit, who, seeing as Jane barely speaks and Brain Ghost Dirk, while talking a lot more as is the Striderian habit, is also a part of Jake's mind and unconscious. I think there's a good amount of content to dig into, even if it might not be particularly fascinating or hype to audiences that could include myself. Better wait and see where this goes, this is chapter 1 and it ends on a strong note. ALSO worth considering is that there double monthly update happening eventually is something the team had to keep in mind for sure, so as to not overwork themselves in its eventuality, along whatever the exclusive updates might include. Personally I only expect 1 or two pages? But that's just been how I felt it'd go down. Remember that you aren't paying for this content, you're paying to support its creators, and have a great day!

Dário Paquinha

*KEY SMASHING * OMFG YES (there is SO MUCH dirk In my life and I dont know what to do with it but I want more)

Fer

This actually makes sense, unlike all the "but this is not enough!!1!1!" comments. Though I think that in a couple updates we'll actually get more pages, as rn they are probably still settling down and building up some stuff.

Fabiola

If Ghost Dirk returning and Jake becoming a double agent (while exploring his and Jane's characters) isn't big progress and clear continuity from Candy, I don't know what you people want lol

NeoTermina

If there's one thing I know Homestuck for, its sticking to one single narrative and absolutely never jumping around.

Lamp

I'm not going to say this isn't enough content, since I don't know what's going on behind the scenes. But I would like more transparency about the patreon budget and production. I think greater transparency would do a lot to quell fans concerns about the rate of output.

Darel Halgarth

define 'progress' this is not good, and literally is entirely detached from what was going on before with dubious continuity to what actually happened in candy

rj

Just became a patron because my thirst for Homestuck is unquenchable.

Kuro Yamigetsu

In case anyone else is a dumbass like me, the link is the box at the top of the post lol, not the title.

Lamp

Yeah I guess the link didn't work for me for whatever reason but I checked the site just in case

Lamp

Since you don't publish actual income, I have to guesstimate based on the number of $100 subs (on credits page) and total supporters, putting your income at around $7k/month. $300 per page is kinda high. It'd be in line with industry standards (https://www.jimkeefe.com/archives/3644) for comic book pages, but you're not doing those. $100-$150 would be fair. Doing ~200 man-hours of work in a month on a 7 person team isn't.

KaneTW

Never mind, it's an announcement of an upd8, I figured it out

Lamp

It's a link to the latest update! - Kate

What Pumpkin

thank u for my life

jade

24 pages that meaningfully progress things and add new stuff? Not sure what the complaint is lol. I'd like more, yeah, but this was great.

NeoTermina

This was such a good update!! jake looks SO CUTE!!

StrawberryCubes

24 pages over a month is, frankly, nowhere near enough. The update was nice but that's what I'd expect from a ~2 week update schedule.

KaneTW

Am I missing something or is this post just a coming soon announcement? It's fine if so, just checkin

Lamp

how long is the bonus story. as someone whos paid money to this and seeing about 1,300 other people also pay money to this, 24 pages just seems kinda lacklustre for the general public's viewing. i don't know if this is a popular opinion and it might be skewed by the dirkjake being something i don't like. i haven't seen a troll in so long, please, show us something

rj

*slaps my own ass* YEEHAW
