I'm one of those weird GenXers who remembers watching the original Speed Racer anime on TV as a kid; my memories of it are entirely impressionistic, I have no memory of any of the plots or stories, just how it looked and felt to watch. (It sits alongside Ultraman in my Japanese media-on-American TV memory banks.) And I'm also one of those people who couldn't watch the Speed Racer movie when it first came out. Unlike some of the critics quoted, I *got* what it was trying to do - it was just too much. I might give it a rewatch sometime, just to see if, like Scott Tobias, my aesthetic muscles have been stretched enough by the intervening years of Scott Pilgrim & al. as catalogued in the conclusion here.
