Arryn's death triggered a maelström of events:
Arryn dies, a letter is sent to Catelyn Stark saying suggesting that the Lannisters killed him, convincing Ned Stark to join King Robert as the Hand;
At King's Landing, as the Hand of the King, he starts to investigate Jon Arryn's death, where he finds out that Joffrey is not a Baratheon, but actually an incest-conceived Lannister;
Robert dies and, since no one knows the truth but Ned, Joffrey becomes King, Ned rebels and don't accept Joffrey as the true king, leading to his death
