2025-02-04 15:31:20 +0000 UTCGreat video essay. I first saw Pulp Fiction during my senior year of college, and I remember being struck by how fresh and unpredictable it felt. Looking back, I still think it’s a much better film than Forrest Gump, though I wouldn't say it carries much deep meaning—then again, most pulp literature doesn’t either. Pulp Fiction is essentially fun, fast-food cinema: stylish, sharply written, and packed with energy. It re-romanticized the hitman in pop culture, which unfortunately led to a bunch of miserable imitations—Mad Dog Time, Two Days in the Valley, 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag, The Usual Suspects, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Suicide Kings, Underworld (arguably the worst of the bunch), and many others. One after the other. Watching these films try to copy the "cool" Pulp Fiction formula was so depressing. At the time of its release, Pulp Fiction felt like something truly new, and I appreciated it for that alone. It kept me engaged with its unpredictability, it's bizarre characters, funny dialogue and it's crazy plot twists. That said, the last time I saw it, I was really underwheled for whatever reason. Eveyone was just so obsessed with how postmodern and cool it was back in 94.

2025-01-30 22:09:41 +0000 UTCtarantino has been an interesting figure in my life, almost all of his filmography could be found in my family’s massive DVD collection. i’d get mad when my family would watch kill bill while i was far too young and they’d make me sit out of movie night. pulp fiction was the one i enjoyed most later on. now i’d have to rewatch to say if that’s still the case. i wonder if pulp fiction and some of his other films will resurface in popularity soon. he’s fallen off, so maybe now the cycle will come back in his favor.
