Greetings everyone!

It’s no real secret that Fernando and I love games and definitely spend a lot of time getting influenced by the things we play. I will say, this one was basically Fernando’s idea from start to finish. He came to me, told me the concept and I just wrote it!

As I mentioned above, this one was all Fernando’s thoughts from start to finish. He had the initial thought and I just went with the writing of it. He wanted something that could control a creature for a period of time while also being a deadly weapon in its own right. A spear was just the final form that it landed on.

I knew that I had to limit it in a few key ways, those being limiting use and also not making the DC too high for something to be able to have a reasonable chance at actually succeeding against it. This is a powerful item and gives you the ability to essentially take a turn away from a creature, but also gives you the power to force it to do something. There are a lot of instances where something like that could easily be abused.

I ended up modeling it off of the Dominate Monster spell and that felt about right for how I wanted it to function, although a bit more limited. There’s intrinsic power in giving a non-caster class the ability to have a spell-like ability so the limits imposed were definitely necessary.

We love creating things that harken back to things we really love and items like this just give us a lot of joy when we get to make them. Also it let us step into something that’s a bit different from our usual with some sci-fi bent to it while still keeping it rooted in fantasy. Hopefully you enjoyed it as much as we did.
