Ferret Tufts | Patreon Weekly #308
Added 2025-04-28 14:00:13 +0000 UTCHey Patrons! In this weekly I’m going to show off a new trinket coming in v3.1!
This weekly also includes an audio Q&A! You can find audio timestamps at the end of this weekly.
A New Trinket
While new items didn’t do spectacularly in the most recent polls, I have had this one in my head for a little while, and so dedicated a little time to adding it in v3.1. It’s a new trinket with more of a cute aesthetic this time. It’s a little reference to a favourite ferret.

Gameplay-wise this trinket is another combat modifier, a little bit like the clover, but affecting accuracy instead of damage ranges. The player gets a sort of discount ring of evasion effect, but in exchange enemies get some more evasion too! I expect experienced players are going to really like this trinket, as it nicely ties into ignoring enemy evasion via positioning, abilities, or magic.
I’m still toying with the exact numbers on the effect, I suspect 25/15% per level might be a bit much, but previously it was 10/5% and the trinket barely felt like it was doing anything. There’s a fine balance here between making the trinket not generally bad, impactful feeling, but also not so pronounced that builds which ignore acc (e.g. wands) benefit hugely from it.
I’m pretty happy with how the sprite turned out, but as usual it took a little while to get there. It’s been a little while since I showed off an art process, so I made sure to capture it with this one. Here’s the major steps I took to make a ferret tuft sprite that didn’t look like garbage:

looks like a rolled up scroll, scrapped
reminds me of a cheese string, scrapped
tried shading using smaller shapes put together, reminds me of a bushel of wheat, that's closer at least
fattened the bottom, trimmed the tips, and shuffled around pixels using RNG, starting to look like fur!
had the idea for a cute bow instead of just a band
cleaned up bow's shading, ditched the bow tails (not enough space to convey them clearly)
made the pixel noise a lot more purposeful, better conveyance of shape
final color pass, increased the fur contrast a bit and made the bow look more limey. done!

Would a wealth ring make you find money on the ground or do I still have to kill things for it to work?" - #1 ring of force stan

Trap mechanism should let you instantly move a trap anywhere within a ~8 tile radius

2025-04-29 23:52:02 +0000 UTCYeah I do think that some of it's unpopularity comes from people just seeing "traps = bad" and that's it.

2025-04-29 15:33:18 +0000 UTCi personally really like the trap mechanism (it's boring but it's one of my more common picks) because i love chasm floors. easy to find secrets, easy to snipe enemies, easy to abuse bwave or stormvine and delete troublesome enemies. i just find the utility of more chasm floors to be a good benefit to have if no other trinkets from the selection are calling out to me

2025-04-29 01:04:07 +0000 UTCReferring to the Ferret Tuft? I'm still waffling on how pronounced I want the effect to be at +3, but yeah I absolutely agree there's a danger of making it too pronounced and therefore absurdly good on things like wand builds. These current test numbers are based on my original max of 40/20% feeling like it did very little. What would you think is more balanced then?
